San Diego Comic-Con Welcomes the Future With Blade Runner 2049 Experience

The Blade Runner 2049 Experience is about to invade San Diego for Comic-Con and immerse fans in the world of the sequel. The annual mega-convention takes place July 20-23 at the San Diego Convention Center, while the long-awaited follow-up to Ridley Scott's classic Blade Runner is due out Oct. 6 and will likely be well-represented by fans in San Diego. Directed by the visionary Denis Villeneuve (Arrival), the trailers for Blade Runner 2049 have already revealed a world as vividly futuristic as the one so memorably presented in Scott's original.

The Los Angeles seen in Blade Runner 2049 will reportedly be even more brutal and unforgiving than the one seen in the original Blade Runner, so it's not necessarily a world one would want to experience in real life. But Alcon Entertainment has created an ambitious live production in San Diego that will transport interested visitors to 2049 L.A., producing one of the essential attractions for Blade Runner fans in town for Comic-Con.

As reported by Business Wire, the Blade Runner 2049 Experience will appear during all four days of Comic-Con. San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, across the street from the convention center, will be transformed into a living, breathing recreation of the world of the Blade Runner franchise. The attraction will feature "unique sights, sounds, and atmosphere" of Los Angeles circa 2049 from the sequel, which itself will feature an impressive amount of practical effects. Admission is free and the experience will be open to all, no Comic-Con pass necessary.

Visitors will be able to check out a gallery of art from Blade Runner 2049 before beginning the experience, which starts off with a virtual reality presentation before entering the live-action area. The actual Spinner from Blade Runner 2049 will be on display and there will also be actors dressed in costumes from the movie dispersed among the crowd. Visitors will even be able to take "tests" to determine whether they are humans or replicants, in addition to other surprises and attractions.

The Blade Runner 2049 Experience will run from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday. It sounds as immersive as any live-action event that will take place during San Diego Comic-Con and will be a must-see for all Blade Runner fans in attendance.

Alcon Entertainment is certainly showing plenty of ambition in its promotion of Blade Runner 2049. Transforming an entire section of San Diego into dystopian Los Angeles is no simple task. This event does little to promise that Blade Runner 2049 will actually approach the same standard set by the 1982 original, but it will give fans in San Diego a potentially unforgettable experience.
