SDCC 2015: 'Stormtrooper' Walks 645 Miles To Comic-Con For Charity

'Stormtrooper' marches to San Diego Comic-Con 2015

The 2015 San-Diego Comic-Con has a lot in store for Star Wars fans. Along with the release of various limited edition figures and new merchandise, there is also the highly anticipated Star Wars/Lucasfilm Panel in Hall H, which promise fans a “special look” at the upcoming film installment The Force Awakens, along with a collection of special guests. (It doesn’t take a genius to work out who they’ll be.)

Meanwhile, amidst all the frenzy of panels, trailer releases, merch stands and Hall H lines, there comes a story sure to warm the heart of any individual - Comic-Con geek, Star Wars fan, or otherwise.

Star Wars fan Kevin Doyle lost his wife, Eileen, to pancreatic cancer in 2012. He decided to do something to raise money in her name and set about organising a sponsored walk. This has not been just any sponsored walk, though; Doyle has just completed a 645 mile trek to San Diego for Comic-Con 2015, dressed as a Stormtrooper.

The couple married in 2011 with R2D2 as their ringbearer, and Doyle says that his wife was a “self-proclaimed geek.” They had only been married for a year when Eileen passed away, and Kevin said he saw the walk as “cleansing.” He also added that he could hear his wife saying “You’re such a dork.”

Doyle is raising funds for “Eileen’s Angels,” a charity which provides gift bags to kids undergoing chemotherapy treatment in hospital. Although his crowdfunding campaign on Crowdrise dubs this the "501 mile walk", Doyle will actually have walked 645 miles by the time his journey is complete.

He left home in Petaluma, CA on July 6 dressed in full Stormtrooper armor and is expected to arrive at Comic-Con today, July 9. Doyle has so far raised $3980 of his $35,000 target. When he gets to Comic-Con he’ll certainly be rewarded with plenty of Star Wars happenings, but no doubt the completion of the journey, and the funds raised, will be reward enough for Kevin Doyle.
