A producer of San Andreas says that they are kicking around ideas for a potential San Andreas 2. The original 2015 film, which starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, was directed by Brad Peyton, who would later collaborate with The Rock on 2018's Rampage. The film followed Johnson's LAFD helicopter rescue pilot and his ex-wife attempting to rescue their daughter after a massive earthquake strikes the California coast. San Andreas also starred Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Paul Giamatti, Archie Punjabi, and Kylie Minogue.

San Andreas was the #16 film in the worldwide box office that year, raking in nearly $500 million off a budget of $110 million. Although San Andreas 2 was announced to be in development back in 2016 with the original cast and crew returning, nothing else came from that announcement. This summer, Alexandra Daddario explained that there was a draft written at one point, but she hasn't heard from New Line about the project since then, and the executive who originally told her about the project no longer works for the company.

Speaking with Screen Rant, producer Hiram Garcia said they "have ideas" for a sequel to San Andreas. "We're working on something there on how we can continue that story," he continued, explaining that the production companies "New Line and Warners have always wanted a sequel to that." He says they want to take just a small chunk of the disaster movie mayhem that is dominated by director Roland Emmerich, whose disaster and disaster-inspired films include 2012The Day After TomorrowIndependence DayGodzilla, and the upcoming Halle Berry film Moonfall. Read the full quote below:

We actually have ideas. We're working on something there on how we can continue that story. So, look, disaster movies are so much fun, and that was such a great concept. Our friend, Beau Flynn, had come up with the idea of being like, "You know what? You love disaster movies. And I would love the idea to do something based around a giant earthquake in the San Andreas fault." So New Line and Warners have always wanted a sequel to that. So we've been working hard to figure out how we could crack something in that space. But we'd love to be able to continue telling the story in that world. And I agree with you, there's something to just the big cataclysmic... I feel like Roland Emmerich is the master of that. He's, that is no one wants to destroy the world more but we'd like to try and take a couple little pieces of it and see what we can blow up as well.

This news comes on the heels of The Rock admitting that he has an idea for San Andreas 2 just last week. While he didn't go into detail, he said that the idea was being batted around behind the scenes at his production company Seven Bucks and that the big issue with getting the film together was scheduling. Other ideas for the film include the synopsis given when the sequel was originally in development in 2016, which would involve the eruption of the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean.

It makes sense that scheduling is what is most challenging in bringing together San Andreas 2. In addition to the commitments by the other big-name actors in the film, The Rock is one of the busiest performers in Hollywood. Just this year he has released Jungle CruiseRed Notice, and the TV series Young Rock, and his future commitments include huge franchises like the DCEU's Black Adam. He might not be attached to the Fast and Furious franchise at the moment, but a superhero contract is tough to wrangle. However, considering the fact that the man himself is thinking about ideas for the film, that means that it's possible to get it made whenever the team can actually find the time for it.
