Samuel L. Jackson Wants To Play Nick Fury For Another 10 Years

Samuel L. Jackson's MCU contract was originally planned for 9 movies, but he wants to keep playing Nick Fury for another decade after Captain Marvel.

Samuel L. Jackson wants to continue playing the MCU's Nick Fury for another 10 years. After first debuting in the post-credits scene of Iron Man in 2008, Jackson has reprised the role as the one time Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. on a handful of occasions. He's made eight appearances so far, and that number will climb in 2019 as he'll likely be seen in all of three Marvel Studios releases: Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

The last time audiences saw Fury though, he was seen as the latest victim of Thanos' snap in Avengers: Infinity War. He's making his return in Captain Marvel thanks to the film's 1990s setting, where he'll be a desk jockey for S.H.I.E.L.D. who still has two eyes - but not for long. Jackson originally signed a nine-picture deal with Marvel Studios though, but it has been at least slightly extended to include his Far From Home appearance. The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel picks up after the events of Avengers 4, making fans aware that Fury will remain involved in future MCU storylines, and beyond that, Jackson isn't ready to say goodbye.

Samuel L. Jackson was profiled by THR where his prolific career was examined. This includes his recurring role in the MCU as Nick Fury, and Oscar-nominee was asked if he had a future in the role beyond his already confirmed upcoming appearances. The 70-year-old Hollywood icon confirmed his desire to play Nick Fury for another 10 years (at least) and into his 80s, and said, "I could be the Alec Guinness of Marvel movies."

Even though actors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth may be the current faces of the MCU - with Brie Larson stepping into that leadership role in Phase 4 - audiences are also very aware of Jackson's important role in the universe. With some of the MCU stars possibly saying goodbye in Avengers: Endgame, it could be in Marvel's best interest to keep Fury around for a few more years to add a long-lasting piece of connectivity between the old and new MCU, and so Fury can continue mentoring these heroes. Since Jackson is clearly interested, his future will just come down to Marvel Studios' long-term plans.

We don't know how Avengers: Endgame will end yet, but set photos and plot points of Far From Home may signal that Fury and whatever organization he is working for will be active in a post-Avengers 4 world. If this is the case, then Jackson should not just get the chance to reappear multiple times this year, but also for the foreseeable future - especially as the MCU introduces mutants and other new elements.

Marvel has also now found a way to tell even more Nick Fury stories after Captain Marvel too. The de-aging technology and processes on display in the film is the biggest step Marvel's taken to digitally reduce the age of an actor (not unlike what was on display in scenes for Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War). The effect is convincing in Captain Marvel's marketing and opens the door for Marvel to use Fury in other prequel films, such as possibly with Black Widow. They could even give him his own movie if they really wanted to now. That may still be a long-shot, but at this point it would be quite surprising if Fury isn't part of the MCU's future in some way - and maybe it will be for another 10 years like Jackson wants.
