Samuel L. Jackson believes he's figured out the ending to Anthony and Joe Russo's Avengers 4. Jackson made his first appearance as Nick Fury in 2008's Iron Man and then reprised his role in multiple films before seemingly dying in the post-credits to Avengers: Infinity War.

The cliffhanger ending for the film was the most shocking events in the MCU to date. Although the scene wasn't exactly like the one in the comics, Thanos the Mad Titan did snap his fingers, thus wiping out half of all life in the universe. While Marvel insists characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange are really dead, the reality is that they are more than likely coming back; several of the heroes have sequels in the works, but it has been hinted that those sequels could be prequels to Avengers 3. So, rather than a matter of if they'll return, it's more a question of who will return and how.

In an interview with Vulture, Samuel L. Jackson - who's reprising the role of Nick Fury in next year's Captain Marvel - revealed he thinks he's figured it out. As he explained:

"Who’s really dead, and who’s really in the flaky wind of Marvel dust, I don’t know, but I do know there’s a solution that they didn’t even have to tell me, just because I know who Captain Marvel is and what all that means."

Nick Fury and Captain Marvel

Both Ant-Man & the Wasp and Captain Marvel are set before the events of Infinity War; in fact, Captain Marvel is set in the early '90s. And while that's the case, both films are expected to link into next year's Avengers 4, introducing concepts and characters who will prove crucial to saving the universe. According to Jackson, a little knowledge of the MCU's Captain Marvel is all you need to work out "a solution" to Thanos' snap.

Right now, audiences don't actually know all that much about the MCU's Captain Marvel. The movie will be an origin story, one that sees the titular hero caught up in the Kree-Skrull War. Her powerset appears to have been adjusted beyond even that of Carol's Binary form in the comics. Back in 2016, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige suggested that Captain Marvel would be the most powerful hero in the MCU to date. "Her powers are off the charts, and when she's introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we've ever had." Brie Larson later agreed, saying, "She's so strong. She can move planets! So, to me, it's like how far can I go with this strength?"

It's clear that the MCU has altered Captain Marvel's backstory and powerset in some as-yet-unknown way. It's believed that she's somehow tied to the Quantum Realm, the mysterious plane of existence that's set to be explored in Ant-Man & the Wasp. It's possible the Quantum Realm could actually be used to travel in time; in which case, that would potentially explain why Jackson thinks he's worked it out.
