Samsung rolled out its latest One UI 5 Beta last week, but the company is now facing backlash for copying iOS 16's lock screen customization options with its latest release. iOS 16 comes with a range of lock screen customization options, allowing users to choose widgets, fonts, colors, and use emojis, photos, or built-in wallpapers. Some of the more notable features include the ability to create multiple custom lock screens and swap between them in seconds. These lock screens can also be linked to a Focus mode so that they change automatically with a scheduled Focus.

iOS 16 also features a full-screen music player and mini visualizer on the lock screen as part of changes made to the 'Now Playing' widget, which is now housed just above the flashlight and camera toggles at the bottom of the screen. Alongside the new lock screen customization options, iOS 16 also comes with a number of notable new features, including the ability to edit and 'unsend' messages, the option to skip CAPTCHAs using Private Access Tokens, a tap-and-drag option in Visual Look Up, and more.

Samsung rolled out its third One UI 5 beta earlier this month with several changes to its lock screen customization options that seem to be heavily influenced by Apple's iOS 16. As pointed out by TechDroider's Vaibhav Jain, One UI 5 beta now offers users the ability to change the placement of the clock and also introduces new font and color options that look very similar to iOS 16. The latest update also introduced a very iOS 16-like long-press action to customize the lock screen instead of having to dig around in settings to make the changes.

Android manufacturers, particularly Xiaomi, are known to blindly copy Apple in terms of design elements and UI features. The popular Chinese OEM is now said to be considering a Dynamic Island ripoff called 'Smart Island' for its future phones, although there are conflicting reports on whether that will actually happen. Samsung has generally refrained from copying Apple, even resisting the urge to introduce a notch when most Android OEMs jumped on the bandwagon following the release of the iPhone X.

That makes the latest iOS-inspired features in One UI 5 all the more jarring, as most of them are minor UI changes that Samsung could have done without. It is especially strange, given how the company recently mocked Apple about the lack of folding phones in its lineup, as well as the 48MP camera 'upgrade' for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max when Samsung is already shipping its flagships with 108MP sensors. Either way, the new iOS 16 lock screen customization options are really neat and intuitive, so Samsung Galaxy users will enjoy the new feature despite the lack of originality.
