Samsung has announced the world’s first LPDDR5X DRAM chip for mobile devices. It is the successor to LPDDR5, the current mobile memory standard that can be found in most flagship smartphones, including the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, the Galaxy S21 series, and the OnePlus 9 Pro 5G. LPDDR5 originally debuted in 2018 with Samsung's 8GB LPDDR5 DRAM chips as a successor to LPDDR4X.

RAM is one of the most important hardware components in any computation device, including PCs, game consoles, smartphones, and tablets. While the amount of RAM often gets most of the attention, the architecture, latency, speed, and other critical characteristics are often overlooked in the process. As is the case with desktop memory, mobile DRAM also tends to get faster and more efficient with every new generation, helping manufacturers design more powerful and environmentally-friendly devices. The latest generation of mobile DRAM isn't likely to be any different, which should make the next-generation of smartphones, tablets, and other devices faster and more efficient than their predecessors.

In an official press release announcing the new generation of mobile memory, Samsung claimed that LPDDR5X DRAM will offer data processing speeds of up to 8.5Gbps, which is over 1.3 times faster than the 6.4Gbps offered by LPDDR5. The company also claimed that the chips will consume around 20-percent less power than LPDDR5 memory. The new LPDDR5X DRAM chip supports a capacity of up to 16GB, and each memory package will have a maximum capacity of 64GB to meet increasing demand for high-capacity mobile DRAM. Samsung also claimed that the new, faster memory standard will fuel further growth for various applications related to 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and the metaverse.

The new memory generation is likely to make its way to a variety of upcoming gadgets including, but not limited to, smartphones, tablets, and laptops. However, it remains to be seen if one of the first will be Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S22 series that's rumored to be announced as soon an February. Recent leaks have suggested that Samsung's next-gen flagship smartphone lineup will likely include the standard Galaxy S22 alongside the Galaxy S22+ and the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Samsung did explain that it is "aggressively moving beyond mobile markets" with its LPDDR5X DRAM chips, but didn't expand any further on that point. According to SangJoon Hwang, Senior Vice President and Head of the DRAM Design Team at Samsung Electronics, the company's LPDDR5X DRAM chips will expand the market for fast and efficient memory beyond smartphones and prove beneficial in areas like servers and automobiles.
