Ahead of Samsung's CES 2023 keynote this week, the company has announced a few key specs of its upcoming lineup of QD-OLED TVs. Samsung announced its first-gen QD-OLED TVs last year, with the aim to dethrone LG as the biggest OLED TV manufacturer in the world. While Samsung first launched OLED TVs more than a decade ago, LG and other TV makers like Sony and Vizio have since overtaken the South Korean giant as it concentrated on Mini LED and futuristic concepts like The Wall.

In a press release, Samsung Display announced that its latest QD-OLED displays would offer a peak brightness of "more than 2,000 nits" and increase power efficiency by up to 25 percent. The advertised brightness levels are almost double what Samsung offered with its first-gen QD-OLED models last year. Samsung Display also announced that the TVs would use AI technology to collect information on each pixel in real time and use it to control light, allowing for better image quality and improved panel efficiency.

According to Samsung Display, the increased brightness levels in its QD-OLED panels are primarily due to a combination of the new IntelliSense AI brightness optimization algorithm and a new HyperEfficient EL material. Higher brightness and contrast levels in a display bring better HDR quality and improved vibrancy. They also ensure that TVs can offer perfect visibility and crystal-clear images even in brightly-lit rooms and halls.

While Samsung has yet to officially announce its 2023 television lineup, LG just unveiled its next-gen OLED TVs, which the company says will offer an unprecedented immersive viewing experience. The lineup will include the Z3, G3, and C3 OLED Evo series that LG claims will offer "higher brightness and color accuracy." Talking to FlatPanelsHD, an LG spokesperson said that the 2023 G3-series devices would hit a peak brightness of 1,800 nits, which is impressive, but still short of Samsung's next-gen QD-OLED brightness levels.

LG's latest OLED TVs also come with the new Alpha 9 Gen 6 AI Processor, which uses "AI-assisted Deep Learning tech" to offer improved audio and video quality. AI-based features baked into the TV also offer improved upscaling for better clarity. There's also enhanced dynamic tone mapping that provides true depth and highlights the detail in every frame. The technology also "detects and refines important objects, such as people's faces, to give them a more lifelike HDR quality." It will be interesting to see the battle between LG and Samsung in the future, with the latter finally putting more emphasis on OLED TVs.
