Samsung is ushering in the next-generation of foldable smartphones, starting with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 2. The successor to the original Galaxy Fold is bigger in size and better in design. Details regarding the smartphone giant's next foldable phone iteration were unveiled during its planned Unpacked event where the company announced a variety of new products, including the Galaxy Note 20 series.

The original Galaxy Fold was arguably one of the hottest new phones when it arrived last year. However, its innovative concept was marred by a plethora of hardware issues caused by its foldable design. After almost a year since the original Fold hit the market, and a Galaxy Z Flip phone in between, Samsung is finally ready to put the rumors to rest by confirming recent leaks and revealing what consumers can expect from its next foldable smartphone entry.

According to Samsung, a lot of user feedback and requests were taken into consideration when the company was coming up with the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The result is a foldable phone with a bigger screen that's outfitted with better technology. The latest foldable iteration fixes the awkwardly thin 4.6-inch Cover screen on its predecessor by making it more similar to a normal-sized 6.2-inch smartphone. The tablet-like Main screen of the original Galaxy Fold was also upgraded from 7.3-inches to a wider 7.6-inches. Another notable change is the switch from the old Fold's noticeable bezels and secondary camera cut-outs, to a more seamless Infinity-O display, in both Cover and Main modes. The overall result is a 120Hz refresh rate display with an almost bezel-less design, similar to recent non-folding Galaxy phones. Other changes include 5G support and a 4,500 mAh Dual Intelligent battery, compared to the original Fold's 4,380 mAh capacity battery.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 2 The Next Big Thing?

Samsung foldable phone

The Galaxy Z Fold 2's hype might be building up, but it's hard not to be skeptical after considering what happened to last year's model. While Samsung went into detail on how the next Fold's hinge was meticulously reinforced, that doesn't guarantee that problems prominent in foldable phones will no longer persist. Its hinge system might even prevent it from being as waterproof as most recent Samsung Galaxy phones are.

Overall, this could make the purchase of a the Galazy Z Fold 2 a risky investment, especially if it comes out with a price as high as its predecessor did. Of course, foldable phones are still an intriguing concept and Samsung is already making its mark and presence felt in this nascent market. If the Galaxy Z Fold 2 turns out well, it just might be what Samsung needs to overtake the likes of Huawei, and once again claim the top smartphone brand spot.
