Samsung is reportedly planning to ditch the 'Classic' variant in its upcoming Galaxy Watch 5 lineup. Expected to be launched later this year, the Galaxy Watch 5 will be the successor to the Galaxy Watch 4-series launched in 2021. Earlier reports had revealed that the Galaxy Watch 5-series could include a 'Pro' model with a massive 572mAh battery, compared to the 361mAh cell in the 44mm Galaxy Watch 4.
Multiple rumors over the past few weeks have also revealed some of the other features of the upcoming smartwatch. According to a report from last month, the Galaxy Watch 5 will ship with a thermometer to help users measure their body temperature. The report claims that Samsung has devised a novel way to measure body temperature accurately through a smartwatch, and the new technology could help users detect COVID-19 symptoms at home.
While Samsung's recent Galaxy Watch lineups have come with a 'Classic' variant, that will reportedly change with the Galaxy Watch 5. According to a new report from SamMobile, the next-generation of Samsung's smartwatches will also have two models, but the 'Classic' variant will be conspicuous by its absence. Instead, the 'Pro' model will take its place, likely with additional features and a higher price-tag compared to the vanilla Galaxy Watch 5 variant. The report further claims that while the vanilla Galaxy Watch 5 model might be offered in two different sizes, the 'Pro' model might come in just one size.
Galaxy Watch 5 With Wear OS 3
The report also seems to confirm that the Galaxy Watch 5 models will run Wear OS 3 out-of-the-box, but with a new version of One UI Watch that will likely have some new functions and enhancements over the previous version. There's no more word on the rest of the specifications, including the processor, the amount of RAM and storage, as well as other hardware components, but those will probably be leaked in the lead-up to the Galaxy Watch 5's expected launch in August.
Samsung's smartwatch journey started with the 'Gear' lineup of watches in 2013 but the company shifted to the 'Galaxy Watch' branding in 2018. Galaxy Watch devices originally shipped with Tizen OS but this changed last year when Samsung reverted to Google's Wear OS. Several months down the line, the devices have been almost universally praised on most counts, although their battery life has come in for some criticism from users. Recent reports, however, suggest that Samsung is planning to address those concerns by putting larger batteries in all models of the Galaxy Watch 5.
