Samsung announced two new Galaxy Tab S tablets during its latest Galaxy Unpacked event. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 and S7 Plus take Android tablets to new heights with many notable features, including 5G and 120Hz displays. While Android tablets typically take a back seat to iPad in terms of popularity, Samsung is not about to give up on this important segment of devices.

Samsung is one of the few manufacturers still making a serious effort at creating powerful Android tablets, releasing a new Galaxy Tab S every year since 2014, and in addition to lower spec tablets aimed at the more casual market. The Tab S series tablets, typically feature the latest processors, high screen quality and include the iconic Samsung S Pen. This signals that Samsung is committed to the form factor and that the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7 Plus show this pedigree. Samsung also bundles apps that take specific advantage of the S Pen and integrate it into the OS experience.

At Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung announced the new Galaxy Tab S7 Plus tablet sports Samsung’s exceptional OLED screen technology, but this year with an ultra smooth 120Hz refresh rate. The S7 Plus features a large 12.4-inch display, while the smaller Tab S7 comes with a still sizable 11-inch display and uses the more affordable LCD screen technology. Nearly identical in other specs, both are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865+, so each should have plenty of power for work and be very responsive in casual use also. With 6GB and 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage (plus a microSD expansion slot) provides enough room for multiple open browser tabs and a large library of images and documents. One of the most significant announcements was that the Tab S7 and S7 Plus come with 5G support, which gives Samsung an advantage over Apple's iPad line.

Closer Look At The Galaxy Tab S7 & S7 Plus

The S7 Plus model, having a bigger body, allows for a greater capacity (10,090 mAh) battery, while the smaller Tab S7 fits in a respectable 7,040 mAh battery. Samsung expects these to last all day and fast-charging is available. As usual, Samsung includes the new S Pen with ultra low latency, and the tablets still have a groove on the back as a clever magnetic attachment. The Galaxy Tab S7 has a fingerprint sensor on the power button, while the Tab S7 Plus features an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that allows authentication by touching the screen. It’s debatable which is better, but the under-screen sensor is more advanced and the same method was used in last year’s Tab S6. Both sizes include dual rear cameras (13-megapixel and 5-megapixel) along with an 8-megapixel selfie camera on the front. Both have quad speakers with Dolby Atmos for great sound.

The 2020 Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 is priced at $649.99, while the Tab S7 Plus comes in at $849.99. Both are top of the line Android tablets, but does that mean they are enough to compete with Apple’s premium iPad Pro series or the lower priced 10.5 iPad Air? Apple holds over 50 percent of the tablet market with its expanding range of iPad devices, with Samsung a distant second holding around 20 percent. However, it’s clear that Samsung, with its Galaxy Tab series of tablets, is continuing the fight to stay in the game and lead the Android tablet space with its Galaxy Tab S series, and providing consumers with a much needed alternative.
