Samsung Galaxy smartphones come with a special 24-hour time-lapse feature that uses advanced image processing technology to achieve this more quickly than would normally be possible. Time-lapse videos often provide some of the most dramatic effects possible, collapsing minutes, hours, and in this case, an entire day into a few seconds.

With a Samsung Galaxy phone, capturing a standard time-lapse video is as easy as switching to Hyperlapse mode, hitting the shutter button, and waiting. However, it used to require a special device called an intervalometer that would tell the camera how long to wait between snapping pictures. To condense a one-hour time period into one minute, perhaps to capture the sun setting, the interval should be set to take one picture every two minutes for an hour. Then the 30 photos could be compiled together and played at the standard 30 frames per second rate to make a one-minute video.

Samsung gave Galaxy smartphones an advanced AI-enhanced feature called Scene Relighting that can generate a 24-hour time-lapse video effect while using just a single outdoor photo and the effect is quite nice, subtly changing color and shading to make it look as if the lighting shifts to sunset tones, night falls on the scene, and a new day begins with morning light. The feature is found in the Gallery app. To start the process look for the 'fast clock' icon in the bottom-right of a compatible outdoor photo. Twitter user Ice Universe shared an example of the video that is generated in a thread that includes a screenshot showing the icon to look for.

Samsung's Scene Relighting effect creates a video that simulates a full 24-hour day to night time-lapse sequence by using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to adjust the color and shading of various parts of the image. The result is saved in the gallery as a 12-second video. Samsung says that the Scene Relighting effect is available for Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold, Z Flip, Note 20, S20, S21, and S22 series phones. However, some have claimed the effect also works on older Samsung phones that have One UI 3.1.1.

Since the entire video is based upon a still image, nothing will move in the scene. It's only a lighting effect, although it is very convincing when applied to the right photo. It's important to be mindful of the limitations. For example, keeping people and animals out of the frame will provide the best effect. Likewise, ocean waves will be stilled, somewhat spoiling the effect, however, lakes or gentle streams might work well. Given that a Samsung Galaxy smartphone applies this effect in the gallery, those decisions don't have to be made at the time photos are being taken, making it easy to browse later to find a good subject for a 24-hour time-lapse.
