Leaked camera specs for the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra just appeared online, and in typical Samsung fashion, they sound nothing short of impressive. Launched this past January, the Galaxy S21 Ultra continues to be one of the best smartphones available today. Its hardware is top-notch, the AMOLED display is virtually perfect, and it has one of the most capable camera systems on the market. Even for a phone that's almost 8 months old, the S21 still has a whole lot to offer.

However, that hasn't stopped some folks from looking forward to what's next. The smartphone industry moves at a rapid pace, and in the case of Samsung, new Galaxy S flagships come out every year like clockwork. They aren't always substantial changes over their predecessors, but Samsung usually finds a couple of key areas to really focus on. For the Galaxy S22 Ultra, one of its main upgrades may be seen in the camera department.

Thanks to a recent post on Chinese social network Weibo, Samsung leaker Ice Universe has shared new details on what folks can expect from the S22 Ultra's cameras. At the heart of the phone will apparently be a 108MP primary camera. That's the same sensor Samsung used on the S21 Ultra, though Ice Universe says it'll have improved focus and optical image stabilization. Inconsistent autofocus was one of the main complaints about the S21 Ultra's otherwise excellent camera setup. If Samsung's made meaningful improvements here, that alone is reason enough to get excited.

S22 Ultra Will Also Have Better Telephoto & Ultra-Wide Cameras

Another notable upgrade is seen with the ultra-wide camera. It'll have the same 12MP resolution as the S21 Ultra, but this time it's gaining optical image stabilization — something the S21 Ultra's ultra-wide camera doesn't have at all. Further improvements are seen with the telephoto cameras. Samsung's apparently keeping the same 3x and 10x optical zoom lengths, though the 10MP sensors are upgraded to 12MP ones.

And, finally, there's the selfie camera. Ice Universe claims it'll be another 40MP sensor with improvement to the quality of the lens. Even more interesting is that it'll retain the traditional hole-punch cutout and skip the under-display tech introduced on the Z Fold 3. Considering the low photo and display quality of this camera on the Fold 3, sticking with the hole punch for another year on the S22 Ultra is probably the best move.

These all sound like welcome improvements for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Samsung may not be reinventing the wheel next year, but it honestly doesn't need to. The S21 Ultra continues to have one of the best smartphone camera setups available in 2021. If Samsung can take that formula and address some of its pain points, it's safe to assume the S22 Ultra's cameras will impress. Bigger things could be coming in 2023 with Samsung's new 200MP sensor, but until then, the Galaxy S22 Ultra should have more than enough to offer.
