Sam Raimi Wants Kirsten Dunst

Sam Raimi had a busy weekend - having to dish out information on the fourth installments of two popular franchises to the hungry press. As I wrote earlier, Raimi answered some questions on the future of the Evil Dead franchise, but he also clarified some stuff for Spider-Man 4.

It was just a few days ago when the official release date for Spider-Man 4 was announced along with the updated schedule for the next four films by Marvel Studios. Now, we have confirmation that a fifth movie is not currently being planned and therefore Spider-Man 4 & 5 are likely not to be shot at the same time as  was rumored to be a possibility last May.

“The writers, producers and I are working out what the story will be, but we haven’t been talking in terms of Part 4 and 5.” Raimi told MTV News. “I’ve read that [about 'Spider-Man 5’] also, but right now we’re just working on the story for ‘Spider-Man 4,’ just that one film.

As for who will drop the gloves with Spidey in the film - no word on who the villain or villains will be in the  but we do know that Raimi has an interest in Morbius from what he said in January.

“We’re definitely talking about working from all the material in the comic books and nothing [invented] outside of that, “Raimi continued. “All the characters or villain or villains, whatever we decide to do will be from Stan Lee’s creations or those that came after him.”

I think the idea of Morbius would help make for a darker themed and more realistic take on Spider-Man which is what we need after the third installment. I also still hold out hope that we’ll see The Lizard as the other villain. Morbius and the Lizard both have very similar origin stories and quite a bit of history together in the comics. Since we see Raimi referencing the material in the comic books, maybe we’ll see something like that.

As for major players involved with this project, Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are signed on but Kirsten Dunst is not. When asked if they could write her out or write in another love interest, Raimi responded

“I can’t imagine making a ‘Spider-Man’ movie without Kirsten,” he said, seemingly contemplating the idea in his head with a long pause. “Of course it can be done because Spider Man has existed without the character of Mary-Jane but she’s one of my favorite parts and it would be a shame not to have her in the picture. I’m hoping she’ll be in it and I’m planning on having a story with her in it.”

I can go either way on this as I wasn’t a big fan of her character in the films and I’d much rather see a story getting away from that relationship as we got plenty of that (come to think of it, far too much – remember Emo-Peter Parker?) over the last three films, what else can they do?

What do you think about Spider-Man 4 and its potential villain line-up?
