Volition has released a new developer trailer for the Saints Row reboot, exploring the game's open-world setting and revealing more on the location's rival gangs. Saints Row was announced as part of Gamescom 2021's Opening Night Live event, revealed with a cinematic trailer along with a snippet of gameplay.

The new Saints Row isn't quite the Saints Row 5 many fans of the series were expecting. The reboot will feature an all-new cast of characters in a brand new setting, Santo Ileso, set in the American Southwest. The Gamescom reveal trailer shows off a bright and vibrant world riddled with crime, complete with various warring gangs each with their own identity and strengths. The games will feature a younger and more modern set of protagonists, a decision that has been criticized by some Saints Row fans.

The latest Saints Row trailer gives fans a closer look at the new open-world they'll get to experience at launch. The developers promise that Santo Ileso will be the "biggest and best" Saints Row playground in the series to date, with nine unique districts set against the beauty of the Southwest Desert. Santo Ileso has its own motto, "keep Santos strange," which the developers explain is all about players embracing their "weirdness and identity." Saints Row will focus on four main characters, with players taking control of the Boss, a charismatic murder machine. Eli, a money-focused investor, will also be one of the game's heroes, along with getaway driver Nina, and Kevin, who wants to be a celebrity chef. Exploring the gangs in the game, the video introduces the warring factions. The international corporation Marshall has its headquarters in Santo Ileso, and has strategic assassins equipped with the latest high-powered gadgets and weapons. Panteros are about muscle, and will use brute force and melee attacks against the player. The Idols stand out in their bright and scant clothing, but their sheer numbers can easily overwhelm. Fans can expect to learn more about Santo Ileso and its characters in the future.

The various gangs of Saints Row should provide a few distinct challenges for the player, with each faction offering different types of enemies to defeat. The trailer promises that gangs will approach the player from different angles, meaning strategy and thought will be required to combat them all successfully. While the size of the game's map hasn't yet been revealed, it's the biggest game in the series to date, and the variety of enemy types should prevent Saints Rows' gameplay from getting stale as players explore what Santo Ileso has to offer.

The Saints Row reboot may not have impressed everyone, but the next addition to the series seems to be set on bringing the fun and chaos the franchise is known for. While the title does appear to missing some of the most beloved characters from previous games, the beautiful and action-packed world might appease fans yet.
