Saints Row is returning in 2022 and Volition has confirmed that the reboot will not only have two-player co-op, but it'll also be cross-gen. The series made a name for itself via its outlandish antics, which were enhanced when players invited their friends to join in on the action. Without co-op, Saints Row probably wouldn't have taken off the way that it did. Thankfully, that aspect of the series doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon.
The Saints Row reboot was revealed at Gamescom with a stylish new CG trailer that introduces fans to the new cast of characters. The likes of Johnny Gat are not set to appear in the game, so a new group will be leading the Saints this time around. Despite the different cast, the game aims to retain the same tone and general gameplay feel of the first three games. That means there's no super powers or aliens, but there may still be some outlandish weapons and scenarios for fans to involve themselves in.
Co-op will also return, allowing for fans to team-up with friends as they play through the game. Saints Row will not be limited by generations either, as Volition revealed to press that the game will allow cross-gen co-op. Those on PS4 can play with PS5 and vice versa, but it's unclear if there's cross-play between platforms such as Xbox to PlayStation. Either way, Saints Row looks to feature some hectic gameplay, and having that mayhem enhanced with two player co-op will hopefully allow for some fun moments that will hearken back to the original games. Volition also teased "pranking" in co-op, but didn't elaborate much further.
As of right now, Saints Row is expected to be in line with the likes of the second and third game in the series from a gameplay perspective. The full story can be played start to finish with a friend, though it hasn't been said whether or not progress will carry over for both players or just the host. Depending on how it works, the host may have some exclusive gameplay options, such as buying property and businesses within their saved game.
Either way, it will hopefully be fun to play a rebooted Saints Row with a friend. Many players reflect fondly on their time driving from mission to mission with a friend in Saints Row 3. Although this could be done in Saints Row 4, there wasn't much incentive to drive places as the player could just move around the world much faster on their own via super powers. It seems like co-op in Saints Row will be much more engaging and rewarding, but fans will have to wait and see how it turns out when the game releases in February 2022.
