Sailor Jupiter from the best-selling manga series, Sailor Moon, is one of the main Sailor Guardians within the series. While her fellow Guardian's powers make sense according to their planet in terms of Roman mythology, Sailor Jupiter's are not as clear cut. However, they do in fact make sense from a broader perspective.

The Sailor Guardians seen most often within Sailor Moon include Sailor Moon, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Venus. They are also referred to as the Inner Senshi, since they protect the inner planets within the galaxy. Sailor Mars has fire abilities while Sailor Mercury has water abilities. Sailor Venus - also known as Sailor V - has control over light and some of her attacks are based on love. This fits in with her planet being named after the goddess of love and beauty.

Sailor Moon was created by Naoko Takeuchi. In the first volume of the Eternal edition of the series, the translator's notes include a few details about Sailor Jupiter's powers. Throughout the series, she is seen to have abilities that are both Earth-based, channeling plants, and sky-based. She is frequently seen controlling thunder and lightning. For Western audiences, these might seem like contrasting powers, but Roman mythology and Daoist (or Taoist) cosmology are both at play with this Sailor Guardian.

Her powers over thunder and lightning are the most obvious connections to her planet. Jupiter is the god of the sky in Roman mythology and he is often depicted controlling thunder and lightning through storms. Unlike Sailor Mars (Rei Hino) and Sailor Mercury (Ami Mizuno), Sailor Jupiter's civilian name doesn't line up with her planet ability within that mythology. Mizuno means "of water" and Hino Rei (by Japanese name order) means "spirit of fire." Kino Makoto is Sailor Jupiter's alter-ego. Kino means "of wood," which seemingly has nothing to do with thunder, lightning, or sky. However, this Sailor Guardian's planet actually has the same naming convention.

In Japanese, the planet Jupiter is actually named mokusei. This means "wood star." Daoist teachings include eight trigrams that make up the philosophy's cosmology. These allow five core elements to be split into eight. The five elements are water, fire, earth, wood, and metal. When the elements are split into eight, lightning and wind are included under the element of wood. When framed in this way, Sailor Jupiter's powers have clearer connections to her role, making it fitting that she can strike foes with thunder or plants. Some of her attacks include Flower Hurricane, Jupiter Thunderbolt, and Jupiter Oak Evolution. This mythology combination also explains why she can use flowers in a storm-like fashion for Flower Hurricane, since wind is incorporated in her broader element. While Western audiences aren't likely to consider plants and electricity as complimenting powers for heroes, Sailor Moon's Sailor Jupiter remains a well-rounded powerhouse to be reckoned with.
