Fans of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon rejoiced with the international premiere of the two Sailor Moon Eternal movies on Netflix. Not only does Sailor Moon Crystal live on in these two feature films, the manga's fourth arc 'Dream'—a story never properly adapted in the '90s anime—is finally played out the way it was meant to be.

The Sailor Guardians reunite in Eternal to battle Queen Nehalennia and the Dead Moon, a new set of villains with ties to Sailor Moon's past life. Seeing as these movies adapt the manga quite faithfully, there may not be a slew of surprises for the more avid fans. However, there is no denying the excitement when watching the best moments play out so beautifully on screen.

Ami's Parents Appear In Her Dream

Ami's parents in Sailor Moon Eternal

So often in any version of Sailor Moon, the other Guardians' families are excluded from the overall narrative. Usagi's family is seen regularly enough in the early acts of the manga, but everyone else's parents are absent. This underscores the theme of chosen families.

When Ami fights Fish Eye in Eternal, she dreams of her friends and her parents. Her mother and father are divorced, and Ami doesn't see either of them enough. Even so, they are important to her; they help provide the strength she needs to overcome Fish Eye's trap. It is nice when the series acknowledges the main characters' lives outside their Guardian duties.

Relatedly, Rei's grandfather is finally seen in Eternal after being left out of Crystal altogether.

The Sailor Power Guardians Appear

In SuperS, the Inners—Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus—all receive their new powers with help from Pegasus. In the manga however, the four Guardians receive assistance from elsewhere. When the Inner and Outer Guardians tangle with the Amazoness Quartet's minions, or they need to lend their strength to Sailor Moon, they are assisted by their Sailor Power Guardians.

These sprites resemble the Sailor Guardians and encourage them to ask for power from their individual castles. Of course, the Sailor Power Guardians never appeared in SuperS.

Phobos And Deimos Are Revealed To Be Rei's Familiars

Phobos and Deimos appear before Rei in Sailor Moon Eternal

In the '90s anime, there are two specific crows infrequently seen around the Hikawa Shrine. Phobos and Deimos are their names, and in the manga, they play a much larger role. They help '90s Rei stave off a yōma's attack in Sailor Mars' first episode, and later, they rescue her grandfather when Zoisite comes after his Rainbow Crystal.

In Eternal, the two crows are revealed to be Rei's familiars, much like how Artemis and Luna are respectively Minako and Usagi's. They take on human-like forms after subduing Tiger's Eye with a barrage of feathers. They then give Rei her Mars Crystal so she can become Super Sailor Mars and destroy Tiger's Eye.

Hotaru Transforms Into Super Sailor Saturn

Super Sailor Saturn's transformation in Sailor Moon Eternal

Unlike in the fourth season of the '90s anime, SuperS, the Outer Guardians are all accounted for, at least in the second Eternal movie. The original anime made a strange choice to exclude the Outers—with the exception of Uranus and Neptune in a self-contained segment in a special episode—during the entirety of SuperS. It's true the corresponding movie features Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, but that film also has nothing to do with the TV story.

Meanwhile, the Outers show up to help the Inners in Eternal. They all receive their power upgrades too, and they contribute to the fantastic conclusion. Much to fans' relief, Sailor Saturn gets her own on-screen transformation after having never had a proper one in the classic anime or in Crystal. It's brief and not as elaborate as others' sequences, but it's still a big moment for Saturn adorers.

Sailor Chibi-Moon Transforms By Herself

Chibi-Usa transforms into Super Sailor Chibi-Moon in Sailor Moon Eternal

In SuperS, Chibi-Usa never transformed by herself on screen after getting her power upgrade from Pegasus. The season relies heavily on Chibi-Usa and Usagi always being physically together and transforming in unison. Although in the episode "Pegasus Disappears: Wavering Friendship," Chibi-Moon shows up solo without Sailor Moon; she doesn't transform by herself, though.

When an ill Usagi tells Chibi-Usa to go on without her in Eternal, the child transforms. The sequence is quick, but it's nice to see Chibi-Moon have more autonomy. In the meantime, Usagi later transforms in tandem with Mamoru.

Double Moon Performs Moon Gorgeous Meditation

Double Moon performs Moon Gorgeous Meditation in Sailor Moon Eternal

In the '90s anime, Super Sailor Moon performs Moon Gorgeous Meditation alone for the most part. The first two SuperS episodes see Sailor Moon holding the Kaleido Moon Scope while Chibi-Moon has her hands on her mother's shoulders. Aside from that and a non-canon moment in the SuperS movie, Chibi-Moon herself never executes Moon Gorgeous Meditation. Instead, she summons Pegasus using the Crystal Carillon, so he can then energize Sailor Moon's Kaleido Moon Scope.

The Mars Flame Sniper And World Shaking Sequences

The sequences for Mars Flame Sniper and World Shaking in Sailor Moon Eternal

There is no denying Sailor Moon Crystal ultimately gave in to supposed demand from fans, who wanted more of the original anime's appeal in the new adaptation. This led to uninspired attack and transformation sequences in the third season; they were all heavily based on their '90s counterparts.

Some fans were happy with this, but others found it to be a missed opportunity to create new and one-of-a-kind sequences. Eternal follows suit, and for the most part, the attacks and transformations all look shockingly prosaic even with modern animation. Audiences can tell, however, there was more effort applied when animating Sailor Mars' Mars Flame Sniper and Sailor Uranus' World Shaking. These two attacks look absolutely gorgeous despite their derivativeness.

The Sailor Quartet's Debut

The Sailor Quartet in Sailor Moon Eternal

The fate of the Amazoness Quartet ended differently in the '90s anime when compared to the source material. After they helped the Guardians defeat Queen Nehalennia, they exited the show without even a goodbye. In the manga, though, the four characters turn out to be something more than reformed villains.

Eternal confirms CereCere, VesVes, PallaPalla, and JunJun's greater destiny from the manga; they are really Sailor Chibi-Moon's future Guardians collectively known as the Sailor Quartet. Individually, they are Sailor Ceres, Sailor Vesta, Sailor Pallas, and Sailor Juno.

The Cats Become Human

Luna Artemis and Diana turn into humans in Sailor Moon Eternal

The 'Dream' arc is especially fantastical, and so many wondrous moments were regretfully left out of the '90s anime for various reasons unbeknownst to the fandom. This includes Artemis and Diana achieving their human forms like Luna; Usagi's cat did become human temporarily in the Sailor Moon S movie, which is based on a manga side-story.

With the appearance of the Sailor Power Guardians and the Sailor Quartet in Eternal, it only makes sense to include the adorable cats as humans.

Everything From The Denouement

Sailor Moon and Endymion with Helios; the Outers in Sailor Moon Eternal

The 'Dream' arc is an epic unlike any other part of the manga. It is thoroughly thrilling and fulfilling for both the characters and readers. Eternal doesn't squander any of that and keeps everything at a tight pace. Seeing the finale play out in full color with stunning animation is a tremendous gift every Sailor Moon fan can cherish.

From seeing the Guardians in their princess gowns, to Usagi becoming Eternal Sailor Moon, the denouement is breathtaking. It's hard to pick just one great moment from the films' last act.
