Disney has had success with inspirational sports dramas in the past. A few Disney Channel Original Movies took place in sporting arenas including The Luck of the Irish, Double TeamedGotta Kick It Up!Full-Court Miracle, and/or Jump In!. Safety promises to be a heartwarming tale of obstacles overcome, perhaps with a little more grit than Disney's movies aimed at a younger audience.

Safety' synopsis reads: inspired by the empowering true story of former Clemson University football safety Ray McElrathbey, a young man facing a series of challenging circumstances, whose dedication and persistence help him to triumph over repeated adversities. Aided by his teammates and the Clemson community, he succeeds on the field while simultaneously raising and caring for his 11-year-old brother Fahmarr.
