Andy Collier and Tor Mian's Sacrifice uniquely captures the Lovecraftian horrors of the iconic author's work on the cosmos, the weird, and the Elder Ones - here's everything we know so far about its release date, cast, and story details.

In the 2010s and 2020, Lovecraftian horror reached new heights in popularity with adaptations and remakes as well as original works based on his own. Richard Stanley's Color Out Of Space set the standard for how important depicting cosmology is and set up the opportunity to create an entire trilogy based on the author's writings. Even the late Stuart Gordon's Lovecraftian horror movies got the remake treatment in 2020 with Tate Steinsiek's Castle Freak. The director kickstarted the first wave of his popularity in the 1980s, especially with Re-Animator starring Jeffrey Combs. As horror progressed, the genre moved towards slashers, poltergeists, and parodies, which left Lovecraft's work rather stagnant until recent years. With major works such as Underwater, a new wave of Lovecraftian mythos are invading horror in new and exciting ways.

While the author is one of the most iconic, it is important to know he is also one of the most controversial. In 2020, Misha Green's Lovecraft Country subverted the racism of H. P. Lovecraft by centering Black people's stories amidst his tales of shoggoths and alchemists. As the year went on, more Lovecraftian tales appeared and on New Year's Eve of 2020, Netflix's Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina took its own shot at the Eldritch Terrors of his Cthulhu mythos. While each of these contributions to Lovecraftian horror are impeccable, Sacrifice has some key components with the potential to set an all new standard in 2021.

Sacrifice Cast and Characters

Sacrifice Horror Movie 2021

Perhaps there is nothing better than an iconic Lovecraftian horror actor returning for another Lovecraft inspired movie. Barbara Crampton stars as Renate. She famously acted alongside Jeffrey Combs in Re-Animator, Castle Freak, and From Beyond, all of which were directed by Stuart Gordon. Crampton is one of the most iconic women in horror, as her career in the genre has lasted for over thirty years and shows no signs of stopping. In Sacrifice, she acts alongside Sophie Stevens (Emma) and Ludovic Hughes (Isaac). Each actor brings their own set of skills to the movie with experience in the horror genre.

Sacrifice Story Details

Sacrifice Horror Movie 2021

Sacrifice is a Lovecraftian horror movie that unpacks toxic masculinity while the Elder Ones lurk in the waters nearby. Set in Norway, it follows Isaac and Emma, a young couple who are expecting their first child. They return to Isaac's home in order to claim his inheritance, similar to Castle Freak. While the trip has exciting prospects ahead for the couple, they do not expect the horrors that reside on the island. Renate's cult activities that worship an ancient deity pose a major threat to the safety of Isaac, Emma, and their unborn child. Sacrifice is a welcome addition to the Lovecraftian horror sub-genre that will surely make its mark as one of the best of 2021.
