The free-to-play ARPG Path of Exile first released in 2013. It is set in a dark and macabre fantasy world full of monsters, undead, and hostile wildlife. As with other ARPGs that inspired it, such as Diablo 2, players will explore randomly generated maps, kill hordes of enemies, and gather an entire army’s worth of armor, weapons, and various other items. Path of Exile is playable either alone or with a group.

Throughout its lifespan, Path of Exile has seen numerous updates. Leagues, which offer a fresh start and new game mechanics, are introduced every few months. In contrast with the previous league Delirium, which featured a dark fog-shrouded alternate reality of nightmares, the current league Harvest features a bright and colorful garden . . . of nightmares. Path of Exile: Harvest introduces the Sacred Grove, a new area tended by the enigmatic Oshabi. In it, players have the option to grow seeds, which will sprout monsters that can be harvested for lifeforce.

As they wander the world, players will see blue glowing roots which will point them in the direction of a seed cache. Once the player clicks on the seed cache, three things will happen. First, it will drop certain types of seeds. Second, Oshabi will appear alongside a portal to the Sacred Grove. Third, if the player has previously planted seeds, it will advance the growth cycle by one. For example, most tier 1 seeds take three growth cycles to fully mature, which means that from when they are planted, players will have to interact with three seed caches. This is not much of a problem because during the league, seed caches can be found in most areas as the player progresses throughout the game’s ten acts.

Harvesting Seeds in Path of Exile: Harvest

In order to harvest seeds, players need to have a Collector and at least eight seeds ready for harvest within the collection area. Upon clicking the Collector, players have a few seconds to prepare before the seeds sprout monsters. By defeating them, the Collector harvests their lifeforce. Different seeds sprout different monsters, which changes the effects available in the crafting system. Monsters will also drop items and sometimes higher tier seeds. It is important to note that there are two types of lifeforce. Regular lifeforce can only be used on crafting or creating new items like additional collectors and pylons, while condensed lifeforce is used for growing higher tier seeds, and can be stored in storage tanks.

There are three different types of seeds, each with different corresponding colors and lifeforce. Wild seeds are purple, Vivid seeds are yellow, and Primal seeds are blue. Higher tier seeds need different types of lifeforce to grow and will require the use of Dispersers. Place a Disperser next to the seeds needing to be fertilized, connect it to a pylon, and then connect that pylon to the Collector of the correct type. Fight these monsters, and the next tier of seeds may drop. Craft high enough tier seeds and bosses will appear, culminating in one powerful, final boss. Path of Exile proves that it is possible to win at gardening.
