The Riverdale spinoff following Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, lands a two season order at Netflix. The CW network has become well known for its interconnected TV universe starring a whole host of DC Comics superheroes, which just aired their annual crossover event. The DC TV universe on The CW is set to expand with the debut of Black Lightning early in 2018, but the network has also adapted shows based on non-superhero comics, like Vertigo's iZombie and Archie Comics' noir-style teen thriller Riverdale.

There has been talk of a Sabrina the Teenage Witch spinoff series from Riverdale for quite a while since the Sabrina character belongs to Archie Comics, which signed a deal with Warner Bros. TV this summer that paved the way for more TV shows based on their books. Earlier this year, it was announced The CW was developing The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a TV adaptation of the same-named graphic novel published by Archie Comics. However, it appears The CW is full up on comic adaptations as the Riverdale companion has found a new home with one of the biggest names in streaming content.

THR is reporting that, although The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was originally being developed for The CW, it has now landed a two-season, 20-episode order from Netflix. Riverdale showrunner and Archie Comics chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will serve as executive producer and writer on the series. Lee Toland Krieger will direct Sabrina and serve as executive producer alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater. The writer's room for Sabrina will start work on Monday with the show aiming to begin production on season 1 in February - though a release date has not yet been set.

As previously revealed, The Chilling Adventures will be markedly different than the Sabrina the Teenage Witch series that ran from 1996-2003. It's described as being in the vein of Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist and is said to be a "dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft." Additionally, the series will see Sabrina, who is half-witch, half-mortal, wrestling with her dual identities while trying to protect those around her from the forces of evil.

The Chilling Adventures started their casting process earlier this fall after the show was officially announced as being in development, though no one was set in the title role of Sabrina. THR reports that while The CW and Warner Bros. TV had a list of names in mind for the role, it will be revisited following the show's move to Netflix. Considering the production is aiming to start filming in February, it's likely they'll cast the role soon enough and officially announce the full cast of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina in the weeks/months to come.

In terms of what the move to Netflix means for the Sabrina TV series, it's looking increasingly unlikely it will have any connection to Riverdale. It was stated prior to the series premiere of Riverdale that the writers intended to eventually introduce Sabrina on The CW show, seemingly with the idea of spinning her off into her own series. However, with The Chilling Adventures now set at Netflix, it's highly doubtful they'll connect at all, despite both shows being produced by Warner Bros. TV. Still, with much of the same behind the scenes talent involved in both shows, fans of Riverdale will likely want to tune into The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
