Netflix's upcoming The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has cast Lucy Davis in the key supporting role of Aunt Hilda. With Riverdale proving that audiences will enthusiastically embrace a darker, updated take on Archie and the gang's characters, Netflix acquired a similar reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will reportedly have a tone similar to notably dark horror movies like Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist and the debut of its 20-episode, two-season run is expected to stream this year. Starring Mad Men's Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina the show has been rapidly rounding out its supporting cast of late, and another supporting role has now been filled.
Deadline reports that Lucy Davis (Wonder Woman) will join the cast as Hilda Spellman, one of Sabrina's two aunts. The English actress played Etta Candy in DC's origin story of the Amazon warrior and is known for her role in the original UK version of The Office and as Dianne in Shaun of the Dead.
Aunt Hilda was played by Caroline Rhea in the Sabrina the Teenage Witch sitcom and voiced by the original Sabrina Melissa Joan Hart in the first of two animated Sabrina shows. In the original Archie comics, Hilda was the meaner of the two aunts Sabrina lives with but in the ongoing 2014 comic books series, she is depicted as kinder and more nurturing. Aunt Hilda has generally been the more impulsive aunt, and prone to vindictiveness.
Lucy Davis was a standout as Wonder Woman's comic relief Etta Candy, but her roles on the original version of The Office and in Shaun of the Dead showed audiences that she has a solid range as an actress. With The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina expected to be at least as dark as Riverdale, we can likely expect her incarnation of Aunt Hilda to be a distinct departure from the sitcom version.
In fact, if the two films continuously mentioned as the show's inspirations are any indication, the new Sabrina show is bound to be even darker and more warped than the CW's Archie update. With this new version of Sabrina reportedly honing in on her conflicted nature as half-witch, half-human, Sabrina's aunts Zelda and Hilda present a ripe opportunity to personify these two sides of her existence. Expect Aunt Zelda's casting to emerge soon, and the choice for that role may tell us even more about the approach to this conflict.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is expected to debut on Netflix in 2018.
