In a first look at Sabretooth #1, the ferocious mutant swears revenge on the X-Men, who banished him to the depths of Krakoa as punishment for taking a human life. Festering in mutant hell, Sabretooth has been plotting his revenge on Professor X, Magneto and the rest of Krakoa—and now he is ready to act. The first issue goes on sale in print and digital February 2.

Although best known now as one of Wolverine’s greatest foes, Sabretooth actually first appeared in 1977’s Iron Fist #14, created by the legendary team of Chris Claremont and John Byrne. The duo intended for Sabretooth to be an Iron Fist villain, but later, when the character was revealed to be a mutant, he joined the Marauders and clashed repeatedly with the X-Men. It was revealed during this time that Sabretooth and Wolverine had a history together. Both have accelerated healing factors, and both served in the mysterious Weapon X program. When Professor X and Magneto helped found the mutant nation of Krakoa, Sabretooth was welcomed, as were all mutants; however, his natural instincts took over and he killed humans while on a mission. For this act, the Quiet Council banished Sabretooth deep inside Krakoa. But Sabretooth did not go quietly, swearing vengeance on those he feels wronged him and that he will get in a new series from writer Victor LaValle and artist Leonard Kirk.

In a sneak peek from Marvel, the publisher revealed the issue’s covers as well as preview pages, shared below. The preview brings readers up to speed on Sabretooth’s punishment, showing both his trial and banishment. During his trial, readers hear his thoughts on his fellow mutants—and he does not like any of them, perhaps with the exception of Apocalypse. Readers then see vines drag Sabretooth off to the depths of Krakoa. He swears revenge on them all, saying he will be free in no time.

The preview ends there, leaving readers hanging until February as to how Sabretooth will free himself from exile, but when he does, no one on the Quiet Council is safe. Sabretooth’s return could not have happened at a worse time, as the foundations of Krakoa begin to crack, with various factions beginning to appear. Destiny’s recent return has driven a wedge even further into mutant society as she threatens to reveal dark secrets about Krakoa that Professor X and Magneto have been keeping from the rest of the X-Men. How will Sabretooth factor into these rapidly growing divisions in Krakoan society? Who will he side with? Will he get his revenge on the Quiet Council? Or will the growing discontent somehow force him to work with the Quiet Council? Sabretooth’s return is bad news not only for the X-Men, but Krakoa as a whole.

Banished at the beginning of the Krakoan era, Sabretooth has now returned, seeking revenge on Professor X and the rest of the X-Men, who sent him to a literal Hell.
