Ryan Reynolds has revealed the first image from the production of a musical comedy with co-star, Will Ferrell. Both actors have maintained a healthy profile over recent years, with Reynolds becoming an international star after two turns as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool in the highly successful franchise of the same name. As for Ferrell, though his comedic roles aren’t as frequent as they once were, he’s still very much a fan-favorite when it comes to the genre.

Naturally, the past year has been a difficult one for everyone, and the film industry has had an especially difficult time balancing the production and release of new titles. Now, however, with the battle against Covid-19 having reached a more encouraging point, production on films that were previously side-lined by the pandemic are slowly but surely getting underway. One such title is Spirited, a Christmas themed musical comedy that features both Ferrell and Reynolds. The film was first revealed in 2019, marketed as a re-telling of Charles Dickens’ classic festive season tale, A Christmas Carol. It might seem that over the years, that particular story has been told every possible way that it can be told, but it’s safe to say that audiences have never seen anything like a musical version starring Ferrell and Reynolds.

With filming finally under way on Spirited, Reynolds has taken to his very popular Twitter account to tease fans with the first image from the production. There’s not a lot to go on, but the image does feature Reynolds and Ferrell locked into the sort of face-to-face stare down that is often seen in other Ferrell films like Step Brothers or the Anchorman movie series. In addition to the image, Reynolds’ tweet acknowledges the first day of filming on the new project, saying: “Day 1 shooting with one of my comedy idols, Will Ferrell. You’d barely notice this was an @Apple movie!" Check out the image below:

Apparently the new film features Reynolds in its lead role as a miserly misanthrope who is transported through three different phases of time: the past, present and future. Ferrell will play the ghost of Christmas present, which is a bit of a let-down for fans of the comedian who were expecting him to have a more prominent role. In Dickens’ original tale (as well as subsequent adaptations), the ghost of Christmas present plays a somewhat brief role in the overall narrative arc of the story. Still, the fact that Spirited is a musical can make even a small amount of time with Reynolds and Ferrell unmissable. Also included in the confirmed cast is Oscar-winner, Octavia Spencer, who reportedly plays Reynolds’ co-worker.

At present, there’s no confirmed release date for Spirited, but obviously it will be released during the Christmas season. Whether that happens to be this year’s or next year’s remains to be seen, though the smart money is on a 2022 release. Until then, fans of both Reynolds and Ferrell are in for a treat as more images will likely find their way online and hopefully, at least some footage of the two in song will arrive sooner rather than later.
