Ryan Reynolds has now responded to the latest news on the delay of his new film, Free Guy. Due to the current ongoing pandemic, many releases have been delayed including Reynolds' new sci-fi/action movie, which also stars Jodie Comer. The movie was first scheduled to be released in the United States in July of 2020, but as a result of Covid-19 and the increasing restrictions, this date was pushed back along with many other 20th Century Studios' productions.

First, the date was pushed to December 2020 and then to May 2021. The anticipation for Free Guy is certainly discernible, as it will be seeing Comer in her first blockbuster role. The actress has drawn a lot of traction since playing everybody's most-loved assassin in BBC America's Killing Eve. Stranger Things' Joe Keery and Academy-Award winner, Taika Waititi, will also join the cast. Combining the effervescent direction of Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Cheaper By the Dozen, The Internship) and the production company who brought the legendary Deadpool to life (TSG Entertainment), Free Guy is sure to be a hit.

Reynolds took to Instagram earlier today with a tongue-in-cheek video where he announced the most recent update for the film's release date, which Comer then shared to her Instagram story. Free Guy will be in theaters on August 13th. This means the film's first release will take place just over two years since production stated back in May 2019. Check out Reynolds' post below:

Of course, it is still unclear what events will unfold over the next few months, hence Reynolds' playful jesting. But with other major releases being planned for around the same time as Free Guy, such as The Suicide Squad, The King's Man and, another Reynolds starring feature, The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, we can hope that by the time August rolls around, restrictions will have eased up.

Although the wait has been long, Free Guy will certainly not be a release to miss. At the New York Comic Con in 2019, Reynolds, who is also producing the movie alongside director Levy, told the crowd: "I haven't been this fully immersed, engaged and pumped [about] something since Deadpool." This certainly got a thrilled reaction from the crowd as they reveled in the movie's concept, along with an advance trailer for the feature. While 20th Century Studios is clearly not so keen on the idea of a home release, as many other features have resorted to, more theaters are reopening and vaccines are being distributed at an efficient rate, so there is hope that this delay for Free Guy's release will finally and officially be the last.
