15 Things You Didn't Know About Ryan Reynolds And Blake Lively’s Relationship

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively just might be one of our favorite celebrity couples of all time. From their seemingly effortless chemistry and charm on the red carpet, to the hilarious fun they have together on social media, to the adoring glances and quick laughter between them, these two restore our faith that Hollywood marriages can work.

Honestly, their love seems entirely genuine. Reynolds is more than happy to talk about his wife on late-night talk shows, singing her praises as a mom to their little girls and recounting funny stories and anecdotes about their lives. Lively does the same in magazine interviews, claiming her husband is the very best of gems, even when he's driving her nuts.

Even though they will turn it on for the cameras when they want to, Ryan and Blake also managed to keep their lives fairly private and away from the spotlight as much as they can. They both grew up in normal households, with many brothers and sisters, so it's the simple things they love the best with their own growing family. Sure, they'll let us in at times – and we relish those moments – but we probably will never see all of it. And that's okay.

The romance thing did not start up the minute Ryan and Blake laid eyes on each other. Quite the contrary. The two met on the set of the film Green Lantern, Reynolds' first attempt at playing a comic-book superhero. As reckless test pilot Hal Jordan, who acquires superhuman powers when he is chosen by the Ring, the actor tried his best to bring life to an otherwise dull movie. Thank goodness he had Lively to help him, playing Jordan's love interest, Carol Ferris.

They definitely hit it off but strictly as friends because they were both already taken (more on that below). Reynolds once explained how the friend-zone was a good place to be: “We were buddies for a long time, which I think is the best way to have a relationship to start as friends.”

You see, Reynolds and Lively know what it means to be in a Hollywood relationship. When they were making Green Lantern in 2010, Lively was in a long-term relationship with her Gossip Girl co-star Penn Badgley, and Reynolds was married to Scarlett Johansson.

Lively and Badgley broke up first, later in the year, and Reynolds and Johansson each filed for divorce about a month after that. Then Ryan and Blake teamed up again in 2011 for the Green Lantern's press tour, showing everyone just how cute they were together, but it was still just a friends thing.

Blake actually dated a few other high-profile stars like Ryan Gosling and Leonardo DiCaprio after her breakup with Badgley, while Reynolds was rumored to be dating Charlize Theron. Through it all, however, Ryan and Blake remained close, so there must have been a few crying-on-shoulder moments.

Then, the magical moment finally happened between them. Ryan and Blake realized they were most definitely more than just friends while on a double date together. Here's the rub: They were on that date with other people, kind of like that scene in When Harry Met Sally.

Reynolds told the story to SiriusXM in early 2016. “We were buddies then. I remember it was funny, because for about a year after Green Lantern had come and gone and all that stuff, we were both single. We went on a double date. She was on a date with another guy, and I was on a date with another girl -- and that was, like, the most awkward date for the respective parties because we were just like fireworks coming across.”

In the age of relentless paparazzi and fans with their smartphones ready to snap away, it's really hard for celebrities to keep their personal lives private. But Lively and Reynolds seem to pull it off pretty darn well. In fact, they kept their newfound romance so quiet, only making brief appearances together, that when it time for them to say their “I do's,” the media had no clue; the two did it completely under wraps.

After a year of dating, the couple wed in 2012 at Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina, and it was only after the weekend event did the media find out and more details were released. Lively wore a Marchesa designed wedding gown, and the private ceremony took place in front of family and friends, including Lively's Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-stars America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel.

Speaking of Blake's wedding dress, there is a story about it. In an interview with Vogue in 2014, Lively said her Marchesa gown got a burn mark on it from a stray sparkler, as she, Ryan and the other wedding guests were enjoying a performance from Lively's good friend, Florence Welch.

Blake admitted it broke her heart, but her new husband suddenly made it all better. In a Vogue interview, she explained, "Later, my dress was hanging up and Ryan said, 'Isn't that beautiful?' I said, 'What?' And he pointed to the burn. My heart just stopped, because it was such a sensitive little subject. And he said, 'You'll always remember that moment with Florence singing and the sparklers. You have that forever, right there, preserved'. Now that's my favorite part of the dress."

Reynolds and Lively have continually professed their desire to have a large family, having come from large families themselves (Ryan has three brothers; Blake has four siblings). Blake once said, “If I could spit out a litter of kids, I would.”

They are off to a good start, producing two amazingly adorable daughters -- James, 3, and Ines, 1. The two have opened up about how great it is to be parents, but Reynolds always gives his wife all the credit. After daughter James was born, the Deadpool actor said on The Late Show with David Letterman, "I'm just a diaper-changing facility hooked up to a life-support system, but my wife, she's breakfast, lunch and dinner. She's a human Denny's all day long … and it never ends for her. She's the most beautiful Denny's you've ever seen though, I guarantee it."

This is just reason 101 why we love Ryan Reynolds so much. While Lively was in labor with their daughter, James, the actor put on the Marvin Gaye tune “Let's Get It On” in the hospital room to, you know, try and lighten the mood. He told late-night host Seth Meyers his wife wasn't exactly amused at that precise moment. “It was like steak knives came out of her eyes. Like, 'Are you f--king s---ting me right now?' Real bad, yeah... I think I just caught her right in the middle of a contraction."

We're pretty sure Lively didn't really have that big a problem with it. While she admitted later this was all too true, she added that doctor was “laughing so hard,” Blake thought she was going to drop the baby. Honestly, how could you not laugh with that man in the room?

Reynolds knows how his wife loves food, so while in his hometown of Vancouver, Canada, the actor knew he one mission: to bring Blake some pies.

Here's how the cute story goes, as told by Ryan on The Graham Norton Show: “My wife is a foodie and she loves these apple pies that they make at this place in Vancouver, so we grabbed a bunch of them and headed back across the border to the States, and we get up to the border crossing. You're not supposed to bring fruits and vegetables across, it's illegal, and this guy knew something was going on. Most Hollywood actors they have, like, a kilo of cocaine in their car, and I’ve just got pie...” Reynolds says he basically had to perform a song for the border guard before they let him pass. Ah, what we do for love.

Now that they have these two precious little girls, Blake and Ryan are being careful what words to use around them and what kind of positive images they want their daughters to have in their lives. This includes deleting the word “bossy” from their vernacular.

In an interview with Glamour, Lively said that she and Ryan once joked that James was bossy, but Reynolds was quick to correct himself. The actress explained her husband said, “I don't ever want to use that word again. You've never heard a man called bossy.” Blake added, "There would never be any negative connotation for a man being a boss, so to add a negative connotation on a woman being bossy? It's belittling. And it doesn't encourage them to be a boss."

If we can say one thing about Ryan and Blake is that they both have exquisite senses of humor, which is quite evident in their social media play.

For example, Reynolds wished his wife a happy birthday by posting a picture of himself, with Blake mostly cut out of it. She reciprocated on her husband's birthday by posting a photo of Ryan Gosling, with Reynolds cut out of most of it. Then there's the hilarious pic of Blake sitting on Reynolds' lap on a Deadpool throne.

There's also daddy Ryan's funny, made-up tweets about what his daughter, James, is doing. “Went to Disneyland because my daughter's obsessed with Mickey Mouse. She was so excited when I got home and told her.” Keep it up, you two.

Trying to maintain a somewhat normal existence for their growing family is of utmost importance to the Reynolds because they both had pretty stable and normal upbringings. Lively has said she and Ryan would feel “selfish” if they didn't give that to their daughters. So, they live in Bedford, NY, away from the glitz and glam of Hollywood, and they also don't work at the same time, so they can all travel together as a family.

Naturally, they both also understand that what they do for a living isn't exactly 9 to 5. “In general, it's nice to have someone who understands what you're doing,” Blake once said on Good Morning America. “Especially because our job is so weird – you have to be 'married' to other people, it's all so strange. It's never normal, even when you're both doing it.”

Along with all the adoring things they say about each other, Reynolds is also pretty amazed by what Lively has taught him about life. "She always responds with empathy,” he once said. “She meets anger with empathy. She meets hate with empathy. She’ll take the time to imagine what happened to a person when they were 5 or 6 years old. And she’s made me a more empathetic person. I had a very fractured relationship with my father. Before he died, she made me remember things I didn't want to remember. She made me remember the good times."

To that, Blake has a mantra she likes to carry with her. "This too shall pass. It's a reminder -- if something is painful, it will pass. But also, if something is beautiful, knowing that this too shall pass makes you hold on to the moment. Savor it." These two, amirite?

Remember how they met and became good friends first? That dynamic has never left their relationship, and Lively credits the fact she thinks of Reynolds as her very best friend as the reason they have such a strong marriage. She once said, "I knew he would always be my best friend for my whole life. That was the biggest thing to me. I'd never known anything like the friendship that I had with him. I could like him as much as I loved him."

The actress also has said they make almost every decision together, from picking out a coffee table, to helping each other with their movie characters. And the best part is when they “turn off our phones and just talk and hang out. What do you do with your best friend? You do nothing."

That isn't to say they don't have regular marriage issues, just like anyone else, but the BFF thing works to their advantage. If they are mad at each other about something, they open up to each other first, before talking to other friends. "I treat him like my girlfriend.” Blake admitted to Glamour. “I’m like, 'Hey, this happened. It upset me. This is how I feel. What do I do?' And he does the same for me. He treats me like his best buddy."

Lively also doesn't want to the world to roll their eyes at their marriage, like it's too perfect, so she doesn't always gush about her man. She explained, “If I say, 'I'm so in love with him all the time,' then you get that eye-rolling, 'Oh, her life is so great, she's so perfect'... I have to learn to stop being defensive."

It would be awesome if the two decided to make another movie together. Certainly Green Lantern can't be the only onscreen legacy they leave us. Unfortunately, we might have to wait awhile, at least according to Reynolds.

"I would absolutely love to do that, but you know, it's a different age now," Ryan once told E! News. “It's a little harder these days than it was back in the day when a couple could do multiple films together."

He also added that because of social media and having things out in the open, it might be hard for audiences to differentiate between them as a couple and the characters they'd play onscreen. "You could do it if there was a little bit of a mystery there. That's a tough thing to pull off now.”
