Star Jensen Ackles responds to the shooting tragedy from the set of Western thriller Rust in which cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed. Ackles stars in the film alongside story co-writer and producer Alec Baldwin, Travis Fimmel, Brady Noon and Frances Fisher. Rust is set in 1880s Kansas and centers on Old West outlaw Harland Rust as he sets out to rescue his 13-year-old grandson Lucas after he is sentenced to hang for an accidental murder and must go on the run from U.S. Marshal Wood Helm and bounty hunter Fenton "Preacher" Lang.

Rust hails from Crown Vic's Joel Souza, who serves as writer and director on the Western on a story he co-developed with Baldwin. Production on the film has been suspended indefinitely following the tragedy last week in which Souza was injured and Hutchins was killed while filming a sequence involving a prop gun fired by Baldwin. As details continue to come out from the investigation into the incident, another star close to the production has shared their reaction to the matter.

A few days after the incident occurred, Ackles took to Instagram to respond to the Rust on-set tragedy that resulted in the loss of cinematographer Hutchins. The Supernatural alum recalled a story from earlier in the week in which he bonded with Hutchins over her and her work, citing the incident as "a tragedy of epic proportions" and inviting followers to donate to the AFI scholarship fund set up in Hutchins' name as he and his wife Daneel have. Ackles' response echoes the reactions from many in Hollywood both close to Hutchins or to similar tragedies, namely the loss of The Crow star Brandon Lee from a mishandled prop gun shooting, to which his family responded to the recent tragedy with condolences and calls for better handling of prop gun effects. After a day of silence, Baldwin himself also opened up about the incident, expressing his "shock and sadness" for the tragedy and assuring his full cooperation with law enforcement in their investigation for the matter. Hutchins' family has also come out in the wake of the tragedy, with her husband still in shock and thanking those who have shared stories and images of her from her life.

Though The Crow should've served as a learning moment for Hollywood, studios are now properly taking steps to ensure safety following the tragedy from the Rust set. ABC's police drama The Rookie has announced it will no longer allow any form of live weapon on the set of the show while many of Hutchins' former collaborators have taken to social media to declare they also won't allow such methods to be used on projects that could necessitate them in the future. Only time will tell who the Santa Fe district attorney elect to bring charges against for Hutchins' death and whether production will resume on Rust.
