Rule number 1 to surviving in Rust is for a player to make sure they have enough food and water to survive. Player's will start each new game of Rust with a small portion of their hunger and hydration bars filled, and if a player doesn't find food and drink quickly they will likely perish before making any substantial progress.

Clean drinking water is pretty easy to come by as players can drink from any body of water on the map, besides the ocean, to replenish the player's hydration. Even eating certain foods can hydrate the player, however, a player's hunger meter can only be filled by eating food. If a player doesn't eat and their hunger meter drains they will slowly take damage until they die. This guide will teach players the best places to find food on any server in order to avoid starvation.

Best Place To Find Food In Rust

There are quite a few ways to obtain food in Rust, but not every method is noob-friendly. Every server has NPCs that will sell food, but that requires players to have at least a few scraps to trade. There are also food caches with minimal amounts of food scattered around that players can loot, but these are not a renewable source of food and the small amount of food they contain won't last players very long. Instead, players need to visit rivers to find the best source of food.

Rivers are easily spotted on the map as they are long slender bodies of water that usually connect to the ocean. These locations are great for new players to visit first as they can safely fill their hydration meter by drinking from the river, and there is plenty of nearby food. Players can find pumpkins and corn growing along the riverbank as well as various types of berries. This food will replenish itself over time, and players can plant the seeds they obtain from eating and foraging the veggies to grow more food. This makes rivers one of the best places to set up camp as players won't have to stress much about Rust's basic necessities. As well, living close to an infinite source of freshwater makes it easier for the player to supply their own crops with the resources they need to grow.
