After viewers listened to Pangina Heal's heartbreaking sobs when she was eliminated by Blu Hydrangea on RuPaul's Drag Race UK Vs. The World, maybe it's time for lipstick eliminations to sashay away. Asking the top Drag Race queens to eliminate a bottom queen not only puts unnecessary stress on the contestants, but it also turns a talent competition into a Survivor-like competition all about strategy. RuPaul isn't the judge anymore, but merely a spectator to the madness.

When this format was introduced on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 2 back in 2016, the lipstick elimination format was initially perceived as a gag-worthy element of the franchise. Alas, the flaws of this elimination method were soon revealed as friendships and alliances took priority over eliminating queens based on the judges' critiques and/or how well each contestant did during a particular maxi challenge. As years went by, Detox got candid in an interview with Trixie Mattel and noted that she regrets sending Alyssa Edwards home over Roxxxy Andrews on All Stars 2. Detox admitted (as reported by Metro): "Roxxxy wasn't doing well, but I couldn't, I literally couldn't do it... I knew I was making the wrong decision." This is not RuPaul's best friend race - it's a drag competition show. Thus, forcing these queens to make difficult decisions that would affect their personal relationships is unfair.

The queens who have had to lipstick eliminate their costars typically get extreme backlash on social media. After Naomi Smalls eliminated frontrunner Manila Luzon on All Stars 4, she received many death threats from fans. Manila took to Twitter to defend Naomi, but the backlash was so intense that even Drag Race judge Michelle Visage had to step in. Michele tweeted: "This is NOT what our show is about. This is NOT what a 'fandom' should be about." The fear was also evident in Blu's petrified face and shaky voice when she eliminated Pangina Heals. Blu knew what was coming for her because she'd seen what had happened to Naomi.

While BenDeLaCreme's self-elimination on All Stars 3 was a fascinating flip on the format, nothing has since come close to that shocking moment. That's because the stakes aren't that high in a lip sync for your legacy versus a lip sync for your life. Viewers would rather watch the bottom two perform a show-stopping number with tricks, flips, and reveals than see the queens beg fellow competitors to let them stay.

Jimbo, who was also eliminated on UK Vs. The World for being a frontrunner, gave their two cents in an interview with Gay Times: the All Stars rules can sometimes feel like a "cop-out" from the judges. Jimbo went on to say "Ru and the judges have one job to do and it's more than just eating snacks and making jokes and sitting there in their outfits." Whether or not RuPaul is afraid of the backlash from sending home an All Stars fan-favorite, this format is beginning to feel old, stale, and unfair.
