Players are outraged at a server glitch that has locked them out of their RuneScape accounts. Despite being 20 years old, RuneScape is running strong with a record number of paid subscribers in recent years, as plenty more free-to-play players are enjoying the decades-old content. The MMORPG has yet to follow fellow games to the dumps, and Jagex, the development team behind the game, continues to support the game. Regardless of its popularity, there are still frustrating glitches that plague RuneScape. One server glitch has made it impossible for players to log in to their accounts and, for some, has even erased decades of data.

Since RuneScape is a game where farming for levels and resources is necessary, not suggested, players often spend hundreds, if not thousands of hours climbing the ranks and developing their character. Some players farm for experience points and others farm for gold in old school RuneScape, and both processes are extremely time-consuming. This makes it even more irritating when players cannot log into their accounts, or even worse, all of their progress is lost. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s been happening to nearly 1% of players.

Posted by Reddit user Kneydallah, 1% of all RuneScape players have been locked out of their accounts for a full month, following a login server crash. While some players found themselves unable to login, others have logged in to their characters being reset. Jagex has been slowly addressing the issue, but after a full month, it has yet to be fully resolved.

The issue is more than just frustrating, as the game has been out for over 20 years. Players who have experienced this issue lost all of their data, and for some, that means 20 years of dedication. Those who can’t log in may be unsure whether they’ll ever have access to their character again, which can be extremely disheartening. Thankfully Jagex keeps telemetry data, which they can use to restore accounts to their most recent load. Although it is a fix, it has been a slow process since Jagex has to manually restore each affected account.

Until the issue is fully resolved, players are unable to continue their RuneScape adventure, a journey that could have been more than just a time investment. One RuneScape player spent $62,000 on microtransactions, an extreme example of a dedicated fan, but one that showcases that the glitch can affect more than just time. Players who have spent money in the game but cannot log into their accounts should be furious, as they are unable to utilize that monetary investment. Hopefully, Jagex finds a quicker way to restore RuneScape accounts and bring back access to the servers that 1% of the player base lost.
