There are simply no actors as hot right now as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The former WWE star turned actor was recently announced as the highest paid actor in Hollywood, and in the last two years alone has starred in three box office hits, Furious 7, San Andreas, and Central Intelligence. Johnson's star continues to rise, as he signs on to more and more projects. In fact, it seems like every week we get more news about a film that Johnson will be bringing to the big screen. Johnson has several projects wrapping up production or in various stages of development. He is about ready to get started on Jumanji, and will also be promoting recently wrapped movies, Moana, Baywatch, and Fast 8. And if that's not enough, he is set to star in Doc Savage, and will be making his long awaited foray into the comic book genre when he plays Black Adam in Shazam.
Due to these recently released and upcoming films, as well as his starring role on HBO's Ballers, Johnson's popularity could not be any higher. So, it is no surprise that franchises that he has already left his mark on, want to continue that relationship. It was recently reported that a third G.I. Joe film was on hold due to Johnson's busy schedule. There have also been announcements regarding sequels to Johnson starring movies, San Andreas and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Now it seems that there have been discussions regarding a sequel to one of Johnson's earlier roles - The Rundown. That movie co-starred Sean William Scott (American Pie), but director Peter Berg says if he can get this actor to star alongside Johnson, he'll get working on the sequel right away.
"We’ve been talking about it. You know, I wanted to do it with Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson. If I could get Jonah Hill, I’d do it tomorrow. If I could get Dwayne and Jonah Hill, I’d do it tomorrow."
When asked if it was even possible that we could see a sequel, Berg responded:
"Anything’s possible. We want to do it, it’s just hard to get everybody, you know. It’s on our minds. We actually wrote a script. But I want Jonah Hill, so reach out to Jonah. Pressure Jonah to do it. If Jonah Hill would do it, I’m in."
The fact that Berg actually has a script, and that there have been talks about The Rundown 2, are promising indicators that the sequel may actually happen. And seeing Dwayne Johnson and Jonah Hill together on the big screen could be a lot of fun. Hill is no stranger to the action buddy genre, as his work with Channing Tatum in the 21 Jump Street franchise has been nothing short of hilarious. Johnson, in his own right, hit it out of the park with his recent buddy film, Central Intelligence, where his chemistry with Kevin Hart was widely praised. And while whether we need a sequel or not to The Rundown is another question, a highlight of that film was Johnson's comedic banter with co-star, Sean William Scott.
It is not necessarily surprising that it has taken a long time to get a sequel to The Rundown made. While the movie was generally liked with a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes (as well as a 66% user score), it was not a success in theaters - on a reported $85 million budget, the film only barely cracked $80 million worldwide. Though with Johnson's star exponentially higher, as well as Jonah Hill being extremely popular, a sequel may make sense, and could very well be an enjoyable hit.
We will keep you posted with any updates regarding The Rundown 2 as they become available.
