The teen heroes of Hulu's Runaways are headed into dark days according to the season 3 teaser trailer. One of the few remnants of Marvel TV that hasn’t been broomed in an effort to shift attention to the upcoming Disney+ streaming service and its big-budget MCU TV shows, Runaways is hoping to not be forgotten this December by turning up the volume so to speak in the action department, a big change from seasons past.

The TV adaption of Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona’s Marvel comic book of the same name has given Hulu its entree into the world of the MCU, though, like it’s Netflix counterparts, the series has yet to deliver a substantive connection to the massive universe beyond a casual reference or two. Still, while the series may not have cameos from Tony Stark or Peter Parker, it does have plenty of teen angst, alien powers, and a pet velociraptor. In other words, the series is making do with what it’s got.

After two seasons where the plot revolved mostly around a hole in the ground, it looks as though Runaways is ready to deliver an more propulsive storyline. That storyline includes a seemingly worthwhile big bad in Morgan le Fay (Elizabeth Hurley), and a threat to Nico (Lyrica Okano), as she’s tempted by the darkness that’s within her. Runaways Season 3 Poster

“In an action-packed Season 3, the Runaways frantically search for their captured friends Chase, Gert, and Karolina. The kids go head to head with an unstoppable enemy who has targeted Leslie -- or more accurately, the child she's carrying. Nico draws them all into a dark realm where its ruler Morgan le Fay, played by Elizabeth Hurley, is much more nefarious than anyone the kids have yet to face.”

That the series seems eager to ramp up the action is certainly a good sign. As is the idea that the kids’ parents have been taken over by aliens, which means they can now be more overtly evil without being completely unredeemable. As the series moves forward, it will be interesting to see how Hulu and Marvel plan to keep interest in Runaways alive, after Disney+ has brought Loki and WandaVision to the masses.
