The season 2 finale of Runaways came with some major unanswered questions, but none are as large as the identity of the final Gibborim host. This reveal is set up to be a big storyline for a potential season 3, which has yet to be announced. While we wait for such an announcement, we already have a theory as for who could be at the center of this great mystery.

The entirety of season 1 and the first half of season 2 of Runaways focuses on the dig site the Pride had been working on. It was eventually revealed by Jonah (Julian McMahon) that his crashed spaceship is at the center of the giant hole, but that is not all. He tells his daughter, Karolina Dean (Virginia Gardner), that the rest of their family is trapped inside the ship. When Jonah attempts to get the ship out of the ground and leave Earth, the kids and parents combine forces to stop him - with the parents blowing up his ship and Nico Minoru (Lyrica Okano) stabbing Jonah through the chest with the Staff of One.

This was believed to be the end of their story until some characters on the show began to have strange mood swings, loss of memory, and even changes to their physical appearance. The finale confirmed that this was the result of them being transformed into something - or rather someone - else. Before we get into who the final host could be, let's first recap everything we know about the Gibborim and the host bodies that have already been revealed.

The Gibborim Hosts Explained

Jonah is the leader of the family of Gibborim, who are an exiled alien Royal Family, and his actual title is that of Magistrate. He was able to escape from the ship before it crashed, but the other three members of his family could not. They were then stuck in the ship deep below the surface of the Earth for decades and were close to leaving the planet behind before their ship was destroyed. It was assumed that the explosion also killed the remaining Gibborim on the ship.

However, the three other members of the Royal Family escaped, along with another alien stowaway known as Xavin. The explosion simply destroyed the ship, while the Gibborim reverted to their non-human state of light and were forced to find new host bodies to conceal their true identities. The same was true for the Magistrate. Instead of dying as a result of Nico's action, he too left his human host body behind and also quickly found another body to take control of

The finale ends with confirmation on three of the Gibborim host bodies, all of whom were shown to be unlike their normal selves in earlier episodes. Victor Stein was revealed to be the new host body for the Magistrate, something many saw coming due to the white, flakey skin he began to have. Stacey Yorkes (Brigid Brannagh) and Tina Minoru (Brittany Ishibashi) were also confirmed to be host bodies for two other members of the Magistrate's family. Although not confirmed, the Gibborim who is using Stacey as a host appears to be the wife of the Magistrate and mother of the two remaining hosts. The Gibborim using Tina is one of their children - but the identity of her brother, the final member of the family, is not revealed.

Runaways Season 3 Story Details

Theory: Alex Is The Last Host

Runaways has yet to reveal the identity, but there is a strong chance that Alex Wilder (Rhenzy Feliz) is going to be the final host. The Royal Family is initially unsure why the prince has not yet revealed himself, but then they believe they have solved a piece of the puzzle. All three of them took on adult host bodies and were able to take control in the same timeframe. The failure of the prince to reveal his identity has led them to believe that he has taken on the body of one of the Runaways. If they are correct, there's only a handful of options - but Alex that is the best bet.

Season 2 of Runaways doesn't get too deep into the logic and rules behind the Gibborim's host jumping, but it is worth once again pointing out the known hosts are Victor Stein, Stacey Yorkes, and Tina Minoru. Not only are all three of them parents, but they are all from different Runaways families. Choosing a different bloodline likely isn't a mandate for the Gibborim when selecting their new host bodies, but it is a great story device for the series. The entire Runaways show is built on fractured relationships and the distrust between families and friends, and making Alex the host would continue this on both levels.

One of the other rules that appears to have been applied (but isn't explicitly confirmed) is that the Gibborim choose hosts that are of the same sex as their original forms. The Magistrate has had three known host bodies, including Victor, and all three have been male. If Stacey is the mother, then this logic holds for her, and Tina's new personality fits that of a princess. So, if the prince does jump to another male body and that of a teenager, then it has to be either Alex or Chase. However, since Chase is locked up by the Royal Family, he would either be at risk of dying at their hand or conveniently already in their presence. Alex is free and was at the dig site just like everyone else, giving him more story potential moving forward.

Plus, Alex switching sides is something that is lifted straight out of the comics. In the original Brian K. Vaughn run that Runaways is largely based on, it is revealed that the Runaways team has a mole who is in communication with the parents. Fans of the comic storyline and the show have been waiting to see how showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage could tackle this concept, and making Alex a Gibborim host would be a completely new way of exploring the arc. Instead of Alex talking to the Pride, he could relay messages and intel to his family when the prince is able to take control of the body momentarily. This would constantly lead to frustration from the Runaways team that the Gibborim always appear to be one step ahead throughout season three's events.

What It Could Mean For Season 3

If Alex is revealed to be the final Gibborim host as we suspect, then it will undoubtedly have major ramifications for the story of season 3. The Runaways will already be after the Gibborim to rescue Chase Stein (Gregg Sulkin) and Karolina, but Alex's turn could come after that has happened. This will then give the Gibborim and Runaways storylines a future, while also being a catalyst for the themes of betrayal to continue. However, the good news for Alex and his possible future in the show after such a reveal is that he could still be saved. Instead of making it so Alex can't be trusted by the team ever again, this development gives them further motivation to defeat the Gibborim but without destroying the physical bodies they inhabit.

But the Runaways won't be the only ones interested in pulling this off, as even the parents have husbands or wives currently held hostage. This could make it an all hands on deck scenario, and yet, the current hosts still wouldn't get every family involved. Alex being the final host will also give Geoffrey and Catherine Wilder interest in this matter. They were arrested the last time we got to see them, so there's no telling how long they'll be locked away. They'll likely once again try to find Alex whenever they do get out. Without Alex being the final host, the Wilders would have to be part of this fight out of the goodness of their hearts or in an effort to win Alex back. But, him not being himself could actually make the Runaways team seek for their help and give them a reason to help out. This is just a theory for the time being, but if the final host does have to be someone at the dig site, a teenager, and a boy, then Alex is the best and most likely route for Runaways season 3 to take.
