The stars of Runaways and Cloak & Dagger have taken to social media to tease a crossover between the two Marvel shows. In the comics, the Runaways have crossed paths with Cloak and Dagger a number of times - sometimes as allies, sometimes as adversaries. Lovers of the comics have long hoped that a crossover of some kind would happen one day.

These hopes have been fanned into flames by a series of comments from Marvel figures about the possibility. Back in March, Cloak & Dagger showrunner Joe Pokaski told eager fans he loved the idea of a team-up - although, at the time, he did stress there were probably 400 lawyers in the way. More recently, the release of Runaways season 2 has afforded stars such as Ryan Sands (aka Geoffrey Wilder in Runaways) the opportunity to say they're in favor. Even Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb said he liked the idea.

The official Cloak & Dagger Twitter account has shared a surprising image showing Cloak & Dagger co-star Aubrey Joseph (Cloak) and Runaways cast member Gregg Sulkin (Chase) standing side-by-side. It's accompanied with a thrilling comment that seems to suggest those "400 lawyers" got out of the way pretty quickly in the face of Marvel's young-adult superheroes, teasing "a very special shoot." It's really not hard to connect the dots, seeing as it looks as though this crossover will be a reality.

Marvel is carving out a strong niche for itself with its young adult offerings, with third-party analytics suggesting they're more in-demand than was generally believed. Data from Parrot Analytics claims they're in the top 0.03 percent of TV shows, ahead of series like The OutpostOrphan Black, and Misfits. Given that's the case, it seems safe to assume that both Hulu and Freeform have seen positive viewing figures for their two respective Marvel shows, and that may well be why they're in favor of a crossover.

Of course, this raises the interesting question of just how the crossover will work. In the comics, Cloak and Dagger crossed paths with the Runaways at a time when their own book was out of print; that essentially meant that, far from a crossover, they'd really just made cameos. In contrast, this crossover is being filmed at a time when both Runaways and Cloak & Dagger are ongoing series.  If the crossover airs before the inevitable Runaways season 3, it will somehow have to navigate that cliffhanger ending. Legal issues will not have been the only problems Marvel had to navigate then; they'll have had to think very carefully about the story as well.

The clue to the story, however, may lie in the fact that the behind-the-scenes photo shows Aubrey Joseph, but not Olivia Holt. Joseph's character, Cloak, is a teleporter who can move through space by accessing the Darkforce. Even in the comics, there's no real limit to his power of teleportation. In fact, in the Civil War comic book event, Cloak was able to transport fighting heroes from the Negative Zone to New York City. There's no reason Cloak's power couldn't take him and Dagger to Los Angeles in the blink of an eye - assuming Marvel can find a reason for him to want to go there in the first place.

The next season of Cloak & Dagger has been confirmed to air sometime in the spring, and it seems safe to assume that this will be part of it. If the second season proves to be a success, it could open up a whole new range of possibilities for Marvel Television - including further team-ups and crossover events akin to those enjoyed by The CW's DCTV shows.
