Runaways season 3 features a crossover with Cloak & Dagger and teases another one for the future - but it'll never happen. As Marvel TV's reach grew over the last several years, fans who tuned into the latest Marvel content on ABC, Netflix, Freeform, and Hulu held out hope that crossovers could happen. With true crossovers with the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies seemingly out of the question, the potential for the small screen Marvel worlds to connect appeared more feasible.

While there were small crossovers between Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter, as well as The Defenders crossover on Netflix, there was no multi-network event. Fans pleaded for all sorts of crossovers, but the one that made the most sense was Runaways and Cloak & Dagger sharing the screen. The two teenage-led shows shared a similar tone and there is a comic precedent for them interacting. Then, the season 2 finale of Cloak & Dagger appeared to set up this possibility. Marvel announced that fans would get what they asked for earlier this year with the stars of Cloak & Dagger set to appear in an episode of the third season of Runaways.

Now that the new season has arrived, fans of both shows can finally see these Marvel heroes share the screen. After a brief introduction at the end of episode 7, the main crossover takes place in episode 8. Tandy Bowen aka Dagger (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson aka Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) arrive in the Hostel after Nico Minoru (Lyrica Okano) attempts a spell that alerts Cloak of her presence. Joined by Karolina Dean (Virginia Gardner), Chase Stein (Gregg Sulkin), and Gert Yorkes (Ariela Barer), the heroes go to the Dark Dimension to rescue Alex Wilder (Rhenzy Feliz). It isn't easy but the mission is successful and the heroes have a newfound bond with one another. They enjoyed the team-up enough that the Runaways say that it should it happen again, with Tandy saying next time the Runaways can come help them. But, this crossover will never happen.

Runaways Cloak and Dagger Cast Crossover

The main reason that another crossover will not happen is that Runaways and Cloak & Dagger have already been canceled. Marvel made the announcement that Cloak & Dagger would not return for a third season before the initial crossover was even confirmed. This made the newly released crossover potentially the final appearances of Tandy and Tyrone. But, the tease for the next crossover also plays like a future team-up would've seen the case of Runaways head to Cloak & Dagger instead.

With that scenario out of the question, the only other option would be to have Tandy and Tyrone join Runaways season 4. But, Marvel has already confirmed that the third season is the end for Runaways. Without new seasons of Runaways or Cloak & Dagger on the horizon, there will not be a chance for another crossover to happen. It's an unfortunate reality after the fun that the crossover provided, and any other chance to see the Runaways characters interact with Cloak and Dagger on the screen again may have to wait until Marvel Studios potentially reboots them.
