Blumhouse's latest film Run Sweetheart Run is about a young woman who goes on a date with a literal monster, and here's what we know about it so far. Over the last decade, Blumhouse Productions has established itself as arguably the premiere source for theatrical horror films. Its ability to make horror on a low budget and turn it into a massive profit machine is the envy of many in Hollywood, and it's no wonder why.

Films like Get Out, The Purge, Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Happy Death Day have also been box office smashes, in several cases generating franchises in which every subsequent film is also a hit. Sure, Blumhouse occasionally stumbles, such as with their widely disliked and mostly skipped 2019 remake of classic proto-slasher Black Christmas or 2020's dead on arrival reboot of Fantasy Island, but it's never too long before the company knocks it out of the park once again.

Will Run Sweetheart Run be Blumhouse's next big success? Only time will tell, but Blumhouse was impressed enough to acquire the film after its world premiere screening at Sundance, suggesting they see big things in its future. Here's everything we know right now.

Run Sweetheart Run Release Date

Run Sweetheart Run - Ella Balinska and Pilou Asbaek

As mentioned, Run Sweetheart Run - written and directed by rising indie filmmaker Shana Feste - held its world premiere screening on January 27, 2020, as part of the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. It was later scheduled to screen again at South by Southwest on March 13, but that entire festival ended up being canceled due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Run Sweetheart Run was previously slated to hit general theaters on May 8, but again, with movie theaters everywhere closed, that won't be happening. The film is currently without a firm release date.

Run Sweetheart Run Plot Details

Run Sweetheart Run - Ella Balinska

Run Sweetheart Run stars Charlie's Angels' Ella Balinska as Cherie, a single mother who works up the courage to go out on her first date in quite some time. Things go well at first, as Ethan (Overlord's Pilou Asbaek) is handsome, charming, and rich. Unfortunately, Cherie soon bears witness to Ethan's darker side, and to the fact that he isn't exactly human. This leads to a cat and mouse game in which Ethan pursues Cherie all around Los Angeles, seemingly with impunity. It's unclear exactly what Ethan is, but clearly, he's powerful. Veteran TV stars Clark Gregg (Agents of SHIELD), Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad), and Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse) fill out the supporting cast in so far undisclosed roles.
