Rumor Patrol: Justice League Was ‘Unwatchable’ Before Reshoots

Rumors continue to swirl around the troubled production of this fall's much anticipated Justice League movie, with the latest suggesting an early cut of the film was "unwatchable," and that Joss Whedon's reshoots are far more extensive than we've been led to believe.

There's a tremendous amount riding on Justice League, DC's superhero team up answer to Marvel's Avengers. After the financially successful but critically ravaged Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, the DCEU finally found an all around winner with Wonder Woman, a critical darling that continues to pull in cash as the biggest film of the summer at the domestic box office. Justice League director Zack Snyder left the production earlier this year to deal with a family tragedy, but Snyder's footing in the DCEU felt tenuous long before that, as the dark, grim aesthetic he established in Man of Steel and Batman V Superman was far more polarizing than DC intended. Snyder brought in Avengers director Joss Whedon to help rewrite the script before his departure. Whedon took the directorial reins when Snyder departed, and speculation has run rampant as to how much of the film Whedon is changing.

A new rumor would suggest Whedon is changing quite a bit. Batman On Film's Bill Ramey says he's heard that Snyder's initial cut was "unwatchable". He doesn't state who his sources are or what aspects of the cut made the film this way.

While Ramey has a pretty solid track record, this is obviously just a rumor. There's no real way of knowing how early of a cut is being discussed here, and similar rumors of bad early cuts and production troubles dogged Wonder Woman, which ended up being a triumph.

All that said, this is not that difficult of a rumor to buy into. The chief criticisms of Batman V Superman (and to a much lesser degree, Man of Steel) revolved around its dour tone and confusing, highly convoluted plot. Justice League -- which went into production fairly soon after Batman V Superman's release -- had the same writer and director, and could credibly have suffered from the same issues in its early stages.

New DC Films head honcho Geoff Johns has promised a more optimistic, earnest approach to the DCEU going forward, and while Whedon took over Justice League in less than ideal circumstances, exploiting his well established talents to improve a purportedly troubled film seems like a no-brainer. At this point it's a genuine question whether Justice League is more a product of Joss Whedon or Zack Snyder, two superhero film auteurs with decidedly different worldviews.
