The new Rugrats reboot has been revealed in an official trailer from Nickelodeon, showing off the series’ new computer-animated style. Based on the original kids' cartoon, the new show is one of several Paramount+ originals inspired by classic Nickelodeon properties. Rugrats is scheduled to premiere its first batch of episodes on Paramount+ on May 27, with additional episodes coming later on.

For over a decade, Rugrats ran as one of Nickelodeon’s marquee series. Created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain, the show first aired in 1991 and became a cultural icon and an early example of what kids' cartoons would become through the 1990s and early 2000s. The story focused on a group of toddlers who embarked on a series of larger-than-life, imagination-fueled adventures. Rugrats received significant popular success and critical acclaim during its years on the air, accruing four Daytime Emmy Awards and six Kids’ Choice Awards.

After years away from the small screen, Rugrats is coming back via a new show on Paramount+, and an official trailer has revealed its new animation style and the many adventures to come. Klasky, Csupó, and Germain will helm the revival as they did the original, and a number of voice actors from the ‘90s show are set to return as well, including E.G. Daily as Tommy, Nancy Cartwright as Chuckie, and Cheryl Chase as Angelica. Watch the new Rugrats trailer and check out the official poster below.

“This brand-new CG take on the franchise is packed with all-new stories and adventures for the babies,” Nickelodeon Preschool senior vice president Eryk Casemiro said in an official statement, “and pairs original voice cast members with an all-star roster of brand-new talent, making it the perfect combination for the original Nick generation and today’s kids.” Not every original voice actor is returning for the new show, but it’s nice to see so many reprising their roles. The tone and aesthetic of Rugrats has become retrospectively emblematic of 90s cartoons in general, so it should be interesting to see how that style adapts to the modern era.

Rugrats isn’t the only major Nickelodeon series being adapted for new streaming content on Paramount+. The new SpongeBob SquarePants show Kamp Koral premiered on the platform in March, and ViacomCBS announced earlier this year that the new Avatar Studios will be producing Avatar: The Last Airbender content for multiple platforms, including Paramount+. The company is trading heavily in nostalgia with its early original programming, which hopefully will also translate into compelling content for a new generation of fans with shows like Rugrats.
