The CW has removed Ruby Rose's picture from their 2021 Season Promo image following her swift—and still largely unexplained—exit from Batwoman after just one season.

In the series, Rose played Kate Kane/Batwoman, Bruce Wayne's cousin who uses his famous paraphernalia to fight crime in Gotham City. The character was first introduced in the 2018 Arrowverse crossover event "Elseworlds" before eventually starring in season 1 of Batwoman, which aired during The CW's 2019-2020 lineup. On May 14, the network released the first 2021 promo image for its 2020-2021 lineup. It featured pictures of popular Arrowverse characters like Grant Gustin as Barry Allen/The Flash, Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, and, of course, Ruby Rose as Kate Kane/Batwoman. Shockingly, less than a week later, news broke that Rose would officially hang up her cape and bow out of the show, forcing The CW to recast her role before the upcoming second season.

Since then, The CW has removed Rose's picture from its most recent 2021 promo image. Instead, the network's press site replaced it with the signature Batwoman symbol. The CW issued a statement last week on Rose's sudden departure, thanking her for her "contributions to the success of [their] first season and [wishing] her all the best." Rose addressed the exit herself in a cryptic Instagram post this week. In the caption, she thanked the show's cast, crew, producers, and studio, stating that she will stay silent about why she chose to leave, but hinting that "those who know, know."

Sources close to the Batwoman production reported that Rose's departure "wasn't 100-percent her decision" and was more of a "breakup" between the actress and the network. Allegedly, Rose was unhappy working long hours on the show's set in Vancouver, which made the production experience unpleasant for both parties. "It just wasn't a good fit," the source revealed.

Now, The CW is working hard to recast the role in time for season 2, which is still slated for release in January 2021. Although it may prove difficult, producer Marc Guggenheim believes that recasting offers "great creative opportunity" and seemed optimistic about tackling the challenge. While there has been much speculation about Rose's replacement (hello Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Stephanie Beatriz and The Magicians' Jade Tailor), The CW has yet to make any official recasting announcements. They have, however, committed to casting another LGBTQ actress, especially since Kate Kane/Batwoman's character made history as the first-ever lesbian superhero to helm her own series.

So, as Arrowverse fans mourn the loss of Rose's take on Klane, they can still look forward to watching a new—and maybe even improved—version of Batwoman come 2021.
