Screen Rant can exclusively present a clip from the new Austrian sci-fi thriller Rubikon, which arrives in theaters and July 1 and is set to be available simultaneously On Demand. The new movie from IFC Films stars Julia Franz Richter, George Blagden (Vikings and Les Misérables), and Mark Ivanir (Barry) as future space explorers caught in an impossible situation.

Directed by Leni Lauritsch and co-written by her and Jessica Lind, Rubikon takes place in the not-so-distant yet incredibly bleak future. Three decades from now, fatally toxic air pollution has rendered Earth uninhabitable. As untold millions perish and the poor choke on the atmosphere, the wealthy corporations hide behind protected biodomes. This leaves Rubikon space station crew members Hannah (Julia Franz Richter), Gavin (George Blagden) and Dimitri (Mark Ivanir) with the difficult choice of risking themselves to save their fellow humans or saving themselves for a new world.

In Screen Rant's exclusive clip, tensions simmer as Gavin and Dimitri wait nervously for Hannah to return from checking the atmosphere. They soon receive a frantic communication from Vesta Capsule. While none of the trio can make out quite what is being yelled out before the contact is lost, Hannah turns to see a horrifying vision that is not yet evident to the audience. Check out the clip from Rubikon by watching the embedded video or clicking the link below:

Lauritsch's influences range from Solaris and Star Trek to Ex Machina, all of which can be sampled in the tone and scale of the clip above. The tension is already through the roof from the premise alone, but audiences will have to watch Rubikon on July 1 to learn whether these three brave astronauts can rescue their people or even themselves.

As is clear from the theatrical poster shown below, Rubikon focuses heavily on crafting the mounting horror that Hannah and crew feel as the world begins to dissolve before their very eyes. While a work of science fiction, its premise is rooted in a very real environmental concern and one audiences should consider when investing in the plight of the Rubikon crew members.
