RRR director S. S. Rajamouli confirms a sequel is officially in the works. Released this past May, RRR is a massive Indian blockbuster written and directed by Rajamouli, one of Telugu cinema's finest filmmakers, with an original story written by his father, V. Vijayendra Prasad. Uniting two of Tollywood's biggest stars, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan, in the same movie for the first time, RRR was a veritable sensation in India, breaking numerous both office records within in the country and worldwide, beating out Rajamouli's own Baahubali 2. RRR found an even bigger international audience when it was released on Netflix this past May.

Now, it appears a sequel to the massive Indian blockbuster is officially in the early stages of development, Rajamouli confirms. During a recent screening event in Chicago (per Deadline), the RRR director revealed that his father, Prasad, is currently “working on the story” for a sequel to the smash hit, drawing cheers from the crowd in attendance. Read what Rajamouli said below:

I would absolutely love to do that. I can’t reveal many details about it, but my father is the storywriter for all my films; we discussed a bit about it and he is working on the story.

What RRR 2 Could Be About

Jr NTR and Ram Charan in RRR

RRR tells a fictional story about two real-life Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, who meet and become friends during the 1920s. To continue chronicling the friendship between these two characters, RRR 2 would have to feature the returns of N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan, who make up two Rs in the film's working title, along with Rajamouli. It is difficult to speculate about RRR 2's story this early in development, though the sequel will likely continue following Raju and Bheem's epic bromance as they fight for freedom against the British Raj.

More important than what RRR is actually about is how its story is told. With the biggest budget ever for an Indian film, RRR is a three-hour odyssey replete with physics-defying action, tiger fights, energetic dance numbers, and incredible VFX. With RRR 2, audiences will not only be expecting a sequel that matches the spectacle of the original, but outdoes it. Luckily, Rajamouli is no stranger to sequels that outdo the original, as his 2017 film Baahubali 2: The Conclusion managed to accomplish that feat.

The confirmation of RRR 2 being in the works is sure to be exciting for fans of the original, which grossed over $140 million worldwide. However, the RRR sequel is only in the nascent stages of development and is still several years away with Rajamouli's next film starring Mahesh Babu set to start filming in the spring. Hopefully, Rajamouli and Prasad will be able to craft a sequel bigger and better than their massive Tollywood blockbuster, RRR.
