Who doesn't love a good story? A timeless tale, an action-packed epic, or a dark and twisted world that beckons the viewer in. Stories come in many different forms, with one of the more popular ones being RPGs, at least for the gaming community.

Yet, while many games offer intriguing tales, some do falter. For some, the story offered by the long-awaited Last Of Us Part II was one of the unfortunate misses and full of truly horrific moments. As such, perhaps it's pertinent for gamers to revisit the RPG's of old and step back into the worlds and tales many hold dear.

CyberPunk 2077 (2020)

Now, while most of the games on this list come from years long since past, a few come from recent years like CyberPunk 2077. Yes, like TLOU2CyberPunk is a somewhat divided game, mainly due to the absurd amount of bugs that make it frustrating.

Yet, beneath the technical problems, lies a hard-hitting story. From Keanu Reeves living in the player's mind to intricate choices guiding the way through the immersive city and great character moments that push the story to new heights, CyberPunk has a great story to tell buried despite the glitches.

Dark Souls (2007)

Every game affects a player differently. There are games players love to play while there are others they loath with every fiber of their being. Then, there are the games players hate to love. Games so difficult, so soul-crushing yet so intriguing and fascinating to play. Games like Dark Souls.

Considered to be one of the hardest games of all time, Dark Souls offers a simple yet intricate story that immerses players in the world. From difficult choices that match the gameplay and the amazing bosses that challenge the player every step of the way, the story is there for all to see.

Horizon Zero Dawn (2017)

It's always the futuristic storylines that are the weirdest yet interesting. Horizon Zero Dawn basically asks the question: what if the world went upside down and robots became a species? The answer came in the form of Aloy and the game.

Despite the dialogue being a little stilted, the story of Zero Dawn is strong, showcasing a massive and lush world chock full of robotic life and dangers. Players follow Aloy through the world as they work to uncover mysterious AI's and other secrets, making for one exciting game.

Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (2011)

Like with Dark Souls, sometimes, the best games are those with little story to tell. Not all games need to have massive, overarching, and multi-layered stories that expand between multiple characters or timelines. More is not always better, as is the case with Skyrim.

The fifth entry in the Elder Scrolls series,  Skyrim's story follows the classic Dragonborn on a quest through the realm in a bid to rid it of evildoers. From iconic characters, scenes, and of course the branching paths, the story is captivative and far-reaching, especially when one adds in mods.

Deus Ex (2000)

Why do some games have to have incredibly confusing plots and characters? Some games are simple; often down to earth, easy to follow. But of course, there are others, like the first Deus Ex game that go incredibly out there with wildly complex stories.

Set in the future, the game sees players taking control of Agent Denton and slowly unraveling a sci-fi mystery set at the center of technology and Area 51. The game goes insane with several plot points, including the ending but if anything, it benefits the game.

Knights Of The Old Republic (2003)

Even when it's set in a galaxy, far, far away, video games are not always Star Wars strong suit. They've had plenty of hits over the years but just as many misses. Rising above them all though stands the game some fans adore more than the original trilogyKnights Of The Old Republic.

Set years before the events of the prequels, KOTOR follows the player on a journey through the galaxy. From making dark or light side decisions, the story takes gamers on an amazing journey populated by characters like the fan-favorite Darth Revan.

Legend of Zelda: Breathe Of The Wild (2017)

A game's story can be reflected by much more than just simple plot points or characters. It can be seen in the world surrounding the tale being told. If the world is chock full of material, and top-notch visuals that pop, then the story will pop alongside it.

Legend Of Zelda: The Breathe Of The Wild is the epitome of such a game. Blending together an immersive world alongside an incredible story set 9,000 years after Links' disappearance in a timeline that has dozens of secrets for fans to uncover, the game is the best of the best on all fronts.

Mass Effect 2 (2010)

Though the first installment in any series should be high quality, it sometimes takes a sequel to truly perfect and get the details just right. It's why the sequel is almost always better than the original and the product Mass Effect 2 is a testament to that.

Building off of the original game, the sequel plays into the established story and sends the characters on a suicide mission that they may never return from. Thanks to its fantastic storytelling fashion, the game stands out as one of the best.

Fallout 3 (2008)

Audiences always like to imagine what it's like to live in a post-apocalyptic future but would anyone really want to live through it? After all, the dangers, the threats, the evils they'd have to face. It's something Fallout 3 embodies all too well.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

Most games play out with no real consequences. Players can blow stuff up, terrorize NPC's, and overall, just goof off. Yet, in some games, mainly RPG's, every choice and the choices made in The Witcher: Wild Hunt, matter the most.

Taking hold of the classic character Geralt of Riveria, the third installment in The Witcher immerses players in a game full of beasts, incredibly strong weapons, and choices. Depending on the player's actions throughout the tale, one may get a happy or an unhappy ending. It all depends on the player.
