Role-playing games can vary greatly, from the latest action RPGs like Elden Ring to classic turn-based games. Similarly, everyone plays different roles in life, and whether or not they believe in the Zodiac, the personalities laid out by them are commonly seen in everyday life.

From Aries to Pisces, the twelve Zodiac signs not only describe personalities but also can tell people what games they’d enjoy. The typical desires, goals, pitfalls, and more common with each element of the Zodiac can help predict which titles players will find engaging and which ones may best be avoided.

Aries - Chrono Trigger (1995)

On the Chrono Trigger box, a swordsman lunges at a blue monster while a mage empowers his blade.

Those who find themselves under Aries are fierce and dynamic. Their competitive spirit is boundless. There’s nothing more dynamic than the style of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, but this 1995 JRPG classic was fierce in other ways as well.

Chrono Trigger is a standalone adventure with unique mechanics. The active time battle system allowed strategizing. It made battles with enemies more action-packed than its competition. The title is still available on Steam, and its sequel Chrono Cross just re-released on Switch.

Taurus - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)

The Dragonborn looking at the viewer in Skyrim

Skyrim is a fairly old game now. It’s become nostalgic for some who find the old-world medieval charm inviting. Players can slay dragons or simply get married and buy a house in Skyrim. It’s a good fit for the Taurus.

The Taurus seeks relaxing solitary experiences. While there’s plenty of action in the game, it’s also simply fun to explore. A Taurus can solve quests and be dependable or simply just relax in sensual wilderness. It’s a game with a multitude of options and a multitude of platforms to play it on.

Gemini - Pokémon Legends: Arceus (2021)

Pokemon Legends Arceus's promo art has two trainers and their Pokemon standing before a volcano.

Pokémon has always been about the bond between partners. The connection between Pokémon and Trainer is like Gemini's twins. The new Pokémon Legends: Arceus makes it more explicit. The adventure shows how necessary a versatile Pokémon companion is.

Speaking of versatility, the game's a big step forward for Pokémon's formula. The large open world sparks player curiosity. However, the game is still ultimately about kindness shown between Pokémon and Trainer and how it shaped the early, feral Pokémon World. Gemini will find this more than a nostalgic cash grab.

Cancer - Yakuza: Like A Dragon (2020)

The protagonist of Yakuza Like A Dragon stands in turn based combat with some cultists.

Cancers are compassionate and sensitive people. They’re true humanitarians who forge strong friendships they fight to protect. Some might call it simple, but it’s a fulfilling lifestyle. At least, the protagonist of Yakuza: Like A Dragon, Ichiban Kasuga, would agree.

The Yakuza franchise is similar to Cancer. The franchise is commonly thought of as being like GTA, when it’s actually a story about life. Ichiban Kasuga’s story is as heartwarming as it is wacky, and this is a game in which the awesome urban turn-based RPG combat exists because Ichiban likes RPGs. Cancers will enjoy living Ichiban’s life and experiencing his personal growth.

Leo - Final Fantasy VII (1997)

Cloud, a blonde swordsman from Final Fantasy VII, stands facing the huge Shinra building.

Leo is the leader and the trailblazer of the Zodiac. It’s the most visible at all times, and, try as they might, all JRPG’s and many WRPG’s cannot escape Final Fantasy VII. The 1997 classic became one of the first viral games of the internet.

People were stunned by the game’s environmental plot and breathtaking cutscenes. In the late 90’s there was nothing like it. Its complex narrative and great female characters like Tifa were held up as examples of what could be done with video games. It was a landmark title that landmark people like Leos should give a shot, especially with the recent Final Fantasy VII Remake series.

Virgo - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003)

Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic has key art for its remake with Jedi and Sith holding lightsabers.

Virgos are practical. In games, they’ll take quick and efficient action, but also never shy away from lending a helping hand. Plenty of western RPG’s featured this kind of choice, but Bioware games during its heyday were among the top. And there’s one such Bioware magic adventure that takes place in a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic let players explore one of the largest media worlds with one of the most loyal and die hard fan bases. But it was also one of the first games to put players themselves into the analytical shoes of the Jedi. It let them analyze which side to go down and deal with problems efficiently with the franchise’s iconic lightsaber.

Libra - Mass Effect (2007)

Sherpherd stands in full view of a planet in the horizon behind the Mass Effect logo.

Libras are pretty adept at navigating conversations. Tense diplomatic situations are their jam. They know when to be harsh and to be fair. They’re natural negotiators, but also appreciate big social groups to pal around in, like perhaps the spaceship Normandy and its varied and exciting cast of cremates.

They’ll find that and more in Mass Effect and its sequels, available in the compilation Mass Effect Legendary Edition. This legendary RPG series has a focus on gunplay for combat, but the real appeal to the social Libra will be the games conversations. The game was revolutionary for its morality system and multiple choices. This means a good diplomat is sure to have a great time.

Scorpio - Fallout: New Vegas (2010)

Fallout New Vegas's sign hangs over two survivors digging in the wasteland.

You have to be resourceful to survive in the Fallout universe. The pose-apocalyptic wasteland is an inhospitable place where weakness is relentlessly exploited and resources are scarce. The Vault-dwelling protagonists would probably be best fit as a Scorpio. Their strength of self and tendency to make loyal bonds would serve them well.

There are plenty of alliances to join in Fallout: New Vegas. Of course the Scorpio should use their distrustful nature wisely, as everyone's out to get them. But it'll take their strength and spirit to see through the game's campaign as well. The game's plot sees a courier nearly murdered on route, and finishing their job will throw them into a situation even more harrowing than wasteland life.

Sagittarius - Undertale (2015)

The monster cast of Undertale including two goats, a fish, a lizard, and two skeletons, stands above the logo.

Despite having a Archer motif, Sagittarius aren't predisposed to violence. They're fun-loving, humorous individuals who enjoy a good jokes and morals. They definitely prefer video games where violence, even against villains, is minimal. Luckily this charitable sign is going to match with Undertale.

Undertale is a love-letter to classic  JRPG's. It has very jokey and silly sensibilities, but also a deeper message. The gameplay has a pacifistic option where the monsters can be spared and befriended. It's sure to please the idealistic Sagittarius.

Capricorn - Elden Ring (2022)

Elden Ring's map has limited functionality, which makes sure players don't lean on it despite it being rather useful

Capricorn is a down and dirty Earth sign with colors of black and brown. The world of a Capricorn can be depressing. But they make up with it by being good managers. Capricorns are responsible and exhibit high levels of self-control.

They're gonna need it for playing Elden Ring. The latest in the line of Souls-like genre, the game has a open-world with punishing difficulty. But there's tons to learn inside the game's world. It's a world with culture that demands precision, making it a good for disciplined Capricorns.

Aquarius - Disco Elysium (2019)

Disco Elysium promo art with two of the cast's characters set to the artistic backdrop of the urban-fantasy setting

The world of an Aquarius is deep and imaginative and strive for and respect originality in their games. Disco Elysium is a game that feels unlike anything else. Because of this, new players to Disco Elysium might need guidance. Drawing inspiration from Planescape: Torment, it crafts a world that feels like ours but still alien.

In the role of Disco Elysium players fill the role of an amnesiac cop. They’re unleashed on the world to solve a case, but will find a bitter and beautiful world. The game has uncompromising things to say about humanity. The world is beautiful, flawed, and true to itself, which makes it great for an Aquarius.

Pisces - Persona 5 Royal (2019)

Joker holds his mask in Persona 5 Royal

Persona 5 was already a classic JRPG. But the enhanced version, Persona 5 Royal, that came out a few years later was even stronger. It's a stylish game, with beautiful art and outstanding music. It's only fitting that players with the most artistic sign give it a go.

Pisces is the final sign on the Zodiac, and represents compassion and wisdom in additional to its artistic leanings. They also have an appreciate for the spiritual, and Persona 5 is certainly that, with its focus on mental worlds and monsters. Also spiritual is the Tarot, which Persona borrows themes from. P5R and Pisces both identify The World, having learned from the previous games and Zodiacs to become excellent.
