Fans of The CW's Roswell: New Mexico will be disappointed to learn that there's no new episode this week, since several of the network's shows are currently on a short break. However, the good news is that you'll only have to wait another week for more sci-fi romance, as Roswell: New Mexico returns with episode 6, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," on Tuesday, February 26.

Based on the series of novels by Melinda Metz, which were originally adapted for TV 20 years ago, Roswell: New Mexico is set in the famous site of the supposed UFO crash of the 1940s. In the show, the aliens who arrived in the crashed spaceship eventually emerged from their pods and integrated into human society. However, they risk their cover being blown when Max (Nathan Parsons) uses his healing powers to save the life of his recently-returned high school crush, Liz (Jeanine Mason), following a shooting at her parents' diner.

While it can be frustrating to have to wait a weak or more for a new episode of Roswell: New Mexico, these short hiatuses are fairly common on The CW, with shows like Riverdale and Arrow also currently taking a break. There are various reasons why networks do this, but it's often used as a way to extend the overall schedule of a season so that the finale airs during May sweeps - the time period during which Nielsen Ratings and advertisers pay closer attention to ratings. The next sweeps period is April 25 - May 22, so there may well be another break in Roswell: New Mexico's 13-episode first season still to come.

Roswell New Mexico - Liz and Max

Roswell: New Mexico's first five episodes have largely focused on Liz searching for the truth behind the death of her sister, Rosa (Amber Midthunder), after realizing that Max and his siblings know more than they're letting on. As the title suggests, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" will take a step back in time to when the characters were teenagers, and promises to reveal the exact circumstances behind Rosa's death. Whatever those circumstances were, it seems clear that Isobel (Lily Cowles) was responsible, which will likely create a rift between Liz and Max.

The show premiered on January 15 to 1.54 million viewers, and following the expected drop between the premiere and second episode, viewer numbers have stayed pretty consistent over the first five episodes. If Roswell: New Mexico can keep up the intrigue (and wild alien romance) for the rest of the season, it will be in a good position for a season 2 renewal.
