Johnny Galecki returns as David in the newest promo for ABC’s upcoming revival of Roseanne. The sitcom’s return has been surprising for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the willingness of the entire cast to return to play the characters that were, for many, where their careers began. While it’s already been established that the revival will revive John Goodman’s Dan Conner — who famously died in the original series finale — it’s also known that Darlene’s husband David will join the Conners at some point, and as the new promo points out, not much has changed. Well, that’s not entirely true, as everyone’s certainly gotten older and both Darlene and D.J. both have kids, but that’s just important character stuff. On the surface anyway, it’s still the same old Roseanne. That seems to be what the new promo is going for with its heavy emphasis on the early critical reception to the series and with a clever joke in which Galecki remarks “They kept everything exactly the same as when you guys were kids,” to which Darlene responds, “It’s a decorating choice called poverty.” Related: Roseanne Revival Character Guide: How Everybody’s Changed The promo doesn’t reveal too much about the circumstances of David’s return, though his amazement at the time capsule-like state of the Conner household suggests he hasn’t been there in a while, which hints at a possible break in his relationship with Darlene. Galecki is only slated to make a single appearance on the revival given his (lucrative) commitments on CBS’ The Big Bang Theory, so it stands to reason that the revival would turn the actor’s otherwise limited availability into a story point.

Lots of familar faces... and some new ones, too! #Roseanne pic.twitter.com/K5EzYx9bis— Roseanne on ABC (@RoseanneOnABC) March 19, 2018

With the revival set to premiere next week ABC isn’t holding anything back in terms of potential spoilers. Between Galecki’s return and the joke about Dan’s supposed death that the promo opens with, Roseanne appears more interested in banking on comedy and nostalgia than it is on turning the question of what the Conner family has been up to all this time into its main selling point. Other revivals, like NBC’s Will & Grace and USA’s Psych, have taken similar approaches and found considerable success, so it’s no surprise that Roseanne is aiming to bring the series back by simply going back-to-basics. The changes are in place to reflect the passage of time, but beyond that, it’s still the same old Roseanne. Next: Netflix’s Collateral Review: A Smart, Binge-Worthy ProceduralRoseanne premieres Tuesday, March 27 on ABC.
