One of USA Networks’ potential new series, Briarpatch, has brought in some star power by casting Rosario Dawson in the lead role. The series is one of several new pilots ordered by the cable network that includes the Jason Bourne spinoff series Treadstone, as well as Dare Me, an adaptation of author Megan Abbott’s novel of the same name, and Erase, a dark comedy co-created by and starring Denis Leary.
Briarpatch, an adaptation of the 1984 novel of the same name by Ross Thomas, is written and executive produced by former television critic Andy Greenwald. It will see Dawson in the role of Allegra “Pick” Dill, who is described as a “tenacious and highly-skilled investigator working in Washington, DC for a young, ambitious Senator.” When Allegra’s younger sister is killed by a car bomb, the investigation takes Allegra back to her “corrupt Texas hometown. What begins as a search for the murderer becomes a fraught and dangerous excavation of the past Allegra has long sought to bury.”
As reported by Deadline, should it be ordered to series, Briarpatch would mark Dawson’s first lead role in a television series. Recently, Dawson has been seen popping up all over Netflix’s string of Marvel TV shows, as Claire Temple, the would be Night Nurse of that corner of the MCU. Claire most recently appeared in season 2 of Luke Cage, but considering where her character left off, in addition to recent comments made by Dawson herself regarding her future in the Netflix shows, it may be a while before Claire is seen again, if at all.
If that means Dawson finds herself on USA full time she’s in good company, as the network’s output in recent years has produced compelling series like Briarpatch producer Sam Esmail’s Mr. Robot, as well as last year’s The Sinner, whose upcoming second season stars The Leftovers’ Carrie Coon, and this year’s Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. These series and more represent a big shift in the type of shows on the network, with the long-running Suits being the last of the blue-sky dramas that have previously populated its schedule.
Wether or not Briarpatch makes it to series remains to be seen, but with Dawson in the lead role it becomes a far more interesting prospect for viewers and for the network.
Briarpatch has not yet been ordered to series. We will keep you posted with more news as it becomes available.
