Fans of Star Wars have been eagerly awaiting the premiere of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for more than three years. This spinoff film is the first of many planned by Disney/Lucasfilm and will help them carry out their plan of releasing one Star Wars movie every year. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story takes place between the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope, helping to bridge the gap between them while also functioning as a standalone movie.
Ticket sales for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were quite strong, with the film opening in 4,175 theaters around the U.S. - including, several that are showing the film in IMAX and 3D. Rogue One is off to a great start at the box office thanks to its Thursday night preview screenings - but even before then, the film's cast and crew were doing their part to show their appreciation for fans.
The director and cast of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story surprised moviegoers by showing up during an early public screening of the film. Rogue One costar Riz Ahmed posted the following video to Instagram, highlighting the fans’ reaction at the event and several of the stars that appeared onstage, prior to the movie getting started.
Ahmed was joined at the screening by his Rogue One costars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, and Alan Tudyk, as well as Rogue One director Gareth Edwards. Edwards and his Rogue One cast have been active in promoting the movie of late, with appearances on late night television shows, morning shows, and the recent red carpet premiere of the movie. (For more on that, check out our own interviews with Felicity Jones, Alan Tudyk/Riz Ahmed, and Gareth Edwards.)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been well-received by fans and critics alike and looks to perform exceptionally well at the box office - though, admittedly, not on the same record-breaking level as Star Wars: The Force Awakens did last year. The Force Awakens shattered many box office records and remains the highest-grossing movie domestically of all time (with a $937 million take in the U.S. and $2 billion worldwide). Rogue One looks to open with upwards of $140-150 million during its own first weekend in the U.S., so it's fair to say the film is doing more-than-fine on its own terms.
