Legendary director Roger Corman is hosting the Corman Quarantine Film Festival, an online contest for filmmakers to create art from the comfort of home. Roger Corman is an icon of independent film, and a legend within the movie industry. As a director, he created timeless B-level drive-in classics, and as a producer, he discovered filmmakers like Peter Bogdanovich, James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, and countless others.

To spice things up during the current Coronavirus crisis, Corman has announced the first Corman Quarantine Film Festival on Instagram, an open challenge to filmmakers to create a short film with only the resources present in their home. The films must be under two minutes in length, and shot with a cell phone. Anyone can make a movie and send it to Corman using the hashtag #CormanChallenge, and the filmmaker has nominated fellow directors Eli Roth, Andy Muschetti, Peter Bogdanovich, Rodman Flender, Amy H. Jones, and fellow legend of indie film, Lloyd Kaufman to participate.

Hollywood has taken a severe hit from the Coronavirus pandemic. The box office has dropped to effectively zero, while virtually every major summer blockbuster has been pushed to later in the year or even 2021. Film productions have been put on an indefinite hold. Perhaps something like Corman's challenge is just what directors need to keep their creative juices flowing. It's also a tremendous equalizer for young and inexperienced filmmakers to compete on more-or-less equal footing with famous directors. Roger Corman has spent his whole life giving a platform to unknown talent and turning them into household names, and that continues thanks to the Corman Quarantine Film Festival.
