Rockstar Games has responded to backlash over the recently-released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition, which has seen near-universal panning from GTA fans. The remastered collection includes Grand Theft Auto 3Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and was set to introduce game improvements for the latest console generation. However, many have been disappointed with what's believed to be an incomplete release.

The GTA trilogy, announced last month, quickly became one of the most-anticipated games of the year, offering fans the chance to relive the PS2-era classics with a host of improvements. As well as adding GTA 5 controls, the remasters were set to improve graphics, lighting, and more, offering as the title suggests, a definitive way to experience the games. Fans reacted negatively to the collection's first trailer, and when the game launched earlier this month, reactions worsened. The release has been mocked online for a range of issues, from unbearable rain to strange design choices, with GTA trilogy memes going viral across the internet.

In a blog post announcement, Rockstar Games has apologized to fans while admitting the GTA trilogy didn't launch to the standard it had hoped. The publisher has confirmed that multiple game updates will be coming to improve on the game's performance and graphics, though it's not clear when the company expects the title to be up to its usual level of quality. Rockstar said:

"The Grand Theft Auto series — and the games that make up this iconic trilogy — are as special to us as we know they are to fans around the world. The updated versions of these classic games did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect.

"We have ongoing plans to address the technical issues and to improve each game going forward. With each planned update, the games will reach the level of quality that they deserve to be."

The company also confirmed that a new Title Update will be rolled out for all versions of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition in the coming days. While not outright confirming which problems the update will fix, Rockstar stated it will address "a number" of issues.

Modders have already been quick to help fix some of GTA trilogy's issues, but it's likely that the upcoming updates will target most of fans' biggest complaints. One of the most universal criticisms of the game is its character models, which many believe are a step too far from the original designs. Viral screenshots have mocked the unnatural expressions and design choices of many of the games' main characters, with issues including extended fingers, unnerving facial animations, and strange limb movements.

The announcement may go some way in appeasing those who've been unimpressed with the GTA trilogy. As well as the many viral posts that highlight the flaws of the release, there are even more issues still being discovered, including an instance where developer Grove Street Games got the Rockstar Games logo incorrect. While Rockstar hasn't confirmed when the game will be fully updated, it's likely that patches and fixes will be a priority for the time being.
